Calendar Direction as per Vastu: Which Wall to Choose
Putting up a new calendar? Here is the traditional Vastu guidance on which wall to use, where not to hang it, what to do with old calendars, and how to place a desk calendar at work.

01
Does the direction of a calendar matter in Vastu?
Yes, the direction of a calendar matters in Vastu custom, because a calendar stands for the movement of time, much like a clock. Where it hangs is said to reflect how smoothly the days ahead move.
To be honest about the source, printed wall calendars are modern objects and classical Vastu texts do not mention them. Indian homes have long kept a पंचांग (panchang, the traditional almanac), and today's calendar guidance is later custom built on the same respect for time. It is a small, harmless habit that costs nothing to follow.
02
Which wall should a calendar be hung on?
A calendar should be hung on the North, East or West wall of a room. These are the three walls traditionally recommended.
01
North wall
The direction of Kubera, linked with wealth and opportunity. A common choice for the living room, shop or office.
02
East wall
The direction of the rising sun, linked with new beginnings. It suits a fresh year well.
03
West wall
Traditionally linked with steady gains and the completion of work. A good option when the North and East walls are full of windows.
03
Where should you not hang a calendar?
You should not hang a calendar on the South wall, or on or behind a door, according to traditional guidance. These spots are said to slow progress or to keep time 'swinging' with every person who walks in.
01
South wall
The South is the direction of Yama and is linked with endings, so calendars and clocks are usually kept on other walls.
02
On the door
A calendar that moves each time the door opens does not stay still or readable.
03
Behind the door
A hidden calendar is a forgotten one. Out of sight, it soon shows the wrong month.
04
Above the main entrance
Many families also keep the space over the main door clear.
04
What should you do with old calendars?
Take old calendars down as soon as the year ends. In Vastu, an out-of-date calendar is treated like a stopped clock, a small sign of time standing still.
The same applies during the year. Turn the page when the month changes, because a calendar stuck three months behind does the opposite of its job. If you love the pictures, cut them out and frame them. Recycle the remaining paper. If an old calendar carries a deity's image, many families set that page aside respectfully and do not throw it into ordinary waste.
05
Which pictures on a calendar are suitable?
Pleasant, hopeful pictures are suitable on a calendar: sunrise, greenery, flowers, flowing water, birds, mountains or a deity your family prays to. You will see the image every day for a month, so it should feel good to look at.
Images that are usually avoided include war scenes, wild animals attacking, storms, sinking boats, dry or burnt landscapes and crying faces. This is partly Vastu custom and partly common sense about mood. A plain calendar with large, clear dates and no picture at all is also perfectly fine, and often more useful.
06
How should a desk calendar be placed at work?
A desk calendar should be placed on the North or East side of your desk, where you can read it without turning. Keep it showing the current month and free of clutter.
Do not let it block your view of the door or of visitors. If your office wall has room, the wall you face is a better place than the wall behind your chair. For shops, clinics and offices, our commercial Vastu page explains how the wider workspace is arranged.
07
What if your flat has very few free walls?
If your flat has very few free walls, choose whichever North, East or West spot you have and do not worry about the room. In compact Mumbai homes, walls are taken up by windows, wardrobes and the television.
The side of a cupboard that faces the right way, a pin-board in the passage, or the kitchen's East wall away from the stove all work. Not sure which wall is which? Use a phone compass or our direction finder. If the South wall is truly the only place, hang the calendar there and keep it current. A well-kept calendar matters more than a perfectly placed one.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when you want the whole home or office reviewed, not just one object. A calendar is a small detail, and it supports a space that is already balanced. It cannot correct a larger issue.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya, Andheri East, Mumbai, takes compass readings of every room and gives non-structural remedies in a written report. The start of a year is a natural time for such a review. You can book an appointment for an on-site or distant consultation.
Questions
Frequently asked
In which direction should a calendar be placed as per Vastu?
As per Vastu custom, a calendar should be placed on the North, East or West wall. The North is linked with opportunity, the East with new beginnings and the West with steady gains. The South wall and doors are traditionally avoided. Keep the calendar clean, straight and on the current month.
Can I hang a calendar on the South wall?
Traditionally the South wall is avoided for calendars and clocks, as the South is linked with endings. If it is the only free wall in your flat, you may still use it. Keep the calendar up to date and choose a cheerful picture. There is no need for fear.
Is it wrong to keep old calendars at home?
Vastu custom advises against displaying old calendars, because they show time that has passed and are linked with stagnation. Take them down when the year ends. You can keep favourite pictures by framing them, and recycle the paper. Diaries and planners kept as records in a drawer are a different matter.
Can a calendar be hung in the bedroom?
Yes, a calendar can be hung in the bedroom on the North, East or West wall. Avoid placing it directly above the head of the bed. Choose a calm picture, and avoid a calendar crowded with work deadlines if you want the bedroom to stay a place of rest.
Can a calendar be kept in the pooja room?
Many families keep a panchang or a religious calendar near the pooja area, and this is a common practice. Hang it on a side wall and not above the deities. Keep it clean and current, and remove last year's copy when the new one arrives.
