Seven Horses Painting Vastu: Direction, Wall and What to Check
Which wall suits a seven horses painting, and which way should the horses run? A practical guide to placement, what to look for in the picture, and what tradition actually says.

01
Which direction is right for a 7 horse painting as per Vastu?
A seven horses painting is most commonly hung on the South wall of the living room or office. Popular Vastu practice links the South with recognition and reputation, and running horses are seen as a picture of drive and steady effort.
The East and the North are the other two walls in common use. Practitioners differ on which comes first, so it helps to know what each is said to support.
01
South wall
Linked with name, recognition and success in work. The most widely quoted choice.
02
East wall
The direction of Surya, the sun. Linked with growth and new beginnings.
03
North wall
The direction of Kubera. Linked with career and opportunities.
02
Which way should the horses run?
The horses should appear to run into the room, not out through the door or a window. The idea is simple: the energy of the picture should seem to enter your home or cabin, not leave it.
Stand at the entrance and look at the painting. If the horses gallop towards the main door or towards a large window, move the frame to another wall, or choose a print in which they face the other way. Horses running straight towards the viewer are also widely accepted.
To know which wall is which, use a compass and not guesswork. The direction finder does this on your phone.
03
Why seven horses, and is this from classical texts?
Seven horses come from the image of Surya, the sun god, whose chariot is drawn by seven horses in Indian tradition. The Sanskrit word is सप्ताश्व (saptashva, seven horses).
Here is the honest part. The classical Vastu texts are about land, directions and the proportions of buildings. They do not prescribe a painting of seven horses for a living room wall. The practice as we know it is modern and popular, built on an old and respected symbol.
That does not make it wrong. A picture you find uplifting can support your mood and your sense of purpose. Just treat it as a pleasant custom, not as a rule you have broken if you do not own one.
04
What should you check in the picture before buying?
Check the number, the mood and the completeness of the horses before you buy. Many prints sold online look dramatic but miss these basics.
01
Count them
There should be exactly seven horses, all clearly visible.
02
Calm faces
Look for alert, steady expressions. Avoid wild eyes, bared teeth or horses that seem to be fighting.
03
Whole bodies
The frame should not cut off heads or legs.
04
Open ground
Horses on open land or a beach under a clear sky are preferred. Many practitioners avoid horses struggling through deep water, dust or dark clouds.
05
Free horses
Custom prefers horses without reins, saddles or riders.
06
Light colours
White horses with a rising sun behind them are the popular choice. Brown and mixed horses are also used.
05
Where should you not hang a seven horses painting?
Do not hang a seven horses painting in the bedroom, the pooja room, the kitchen or on a wall that faces a toilet door. The picture is full of movement, and these rooms call for rest, stillness or cleanliness.
01
Bedroom
A room for rest. Galloping horses are said to bring restlessness.
02
Pooja room
Keep the prayer space for deities and a lamp.
03
Facing a toilet or washbasin
Traditionally avoided for any auspicious picture.
04
Above the main door
Inside or outside, the horses would seem to be leaving.
06
How should it be hung in a flat or a small office?
Hang it at eye level on a clean, uncluttered wall where you see it every day. In a living room this is usually the wall behind or beside the sofa. In an office it is often the wall you look at from your chair.
Size it to the wall. A huge canvas in a compact hall feels heavy, and a tiny print gets lost. Use a simple wooden or metal frame, keep the glass dust-free, and replace the picture if it fades or tears. For shops, clinics and cabins, our commercial Vastu page explains seating and wall use in more detail.
07
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when progress at work feels stuck and you want to look beyond a single painting. A picture is a finishing touch. The entrance, your seating direction and the state of the South-West usually matter far more.

Questions
Frequently asked
Can I hang a 7 horse painting on the North wall?
Yes, the North wall is one of the three walls commonly used for a seven horses painting. It is the direction of Kubera and is linked with career and opportunities. Make sure the horses run into the room and not towards a door or window on that side.
Is a seven horses painting suitable for the office?
A seven horses painting is widely used in offices and cabins, usually on the South wall or the wall you see from your chair. It is said to support focus and drive. Choose a calm, well-framed picture, and keep it away from the washroom wall and the pantry.
Can I keep a seven horses painting in the bedroom?
Custom advises against keeping a seven horses painting in the bedroom. The image is about speed and effort, while a bedroom is meant for rest. If your living room has no free wall, a study or a work corner is a better place for it than the room you sleep in.
Does the colour of the horses matter?
White horses are the popular choice, as white is linked with peace and clarity, and they recall the horses of Surya. Brown or mixed horses are also used. The mood matters more than the shade: the horses should look calm, strong and united, not frightened or aggressive.
Can I use a horse statue or wallpaper instead of a painting?
Yes, a framed print, a canvas, a metal wall piece or a wallpaper can all be used, as long as the same checks apply. Count seven horses, see that they run inward, and keep the piece clean and undamaged. A single horse statue is a different symbol and is not a substitute.
