Online Tarot Reading: Does It Work the Same?
A reading works through conversation, so a video call can do most of what a table can. Here is what changes online, how to set up your side, and what to be careful of.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Does an online tarot reading work the same way?
For most people, yes. A reading is a guided conversation in which cards act as prompts, and a conversation travels perfectly well over a video call. The reader lays out the spread on their table, shows you each card, and the two of you talk through what it raises.
What makes any reading work is the quality of the exchange — whether you can speak freely, whether the reader can hear hesitation in your voice, whether you feel able to say 'that does not fit'. All of that survives a good connection. None of it survives a bad one.
02
What changes online, and what does not
What changes is mostly atmosphere. Sitting across a table, watching a deck shuffled in front of you, has a settling effect that a screen does not fully reproduce, and some people find it easier to become quiet in someone else's calm room than in their own.
What does not change is the substance: your question, the spread, the discussion and whatever you decide to do afterwards. This is familiar territory in Indian practice more broadly — distant Vastu consultations using floor plans and photographs, and distance Reiki, are both long-established. Working at a distance is normal, not a compromise.
03
How should you set up your side of the call?
Treat it like an appointment, not a phone call you take while doing something else. Five minutes of preparation makes a noticeable difference.
01
A private room
A door you can shut matters more than anything else. If you are worried about being overheard, you will hold back, and the session loses its point.
02
Stable connection
Wi-Fi where the signal is good, with mobile data ready as a fallback. Tell the reader in advance which number to call back on if the line drops.
03
Headphones
They help you hear tone clearly and keep the conversation private in a shared flat.
04
Notifications off
Silence the phone and close other tabs. A reading interrupted by three calls is not a reading.
05
Pen and paper
Write as you go. What strikes you in the moment is easy to lose by the evening.
06
A few minutes of quiet first
Sit still for two or three minutes beforehand. A little ध्यान (dhyana, focused attention) before the call helps you arrive present rather than mid-task.
04
Is video, phone or chat better?
Video is the closest to an in-person session, because you can see the cards and the reader can see you. That two-way visibility helps both sides notice when something has landed and when it has not, and it lets you see the spread as it is — including which cards have fallen reversed, read as a softening or an inward turn rather than as anything ominous.
A phone call works well too, especially for people who find cameras uncomfortable, and photographs of the spread can be shared afterwards. Chat-only readings are the weakest format, because the back-and-forth that makes reflection useful is slow and easily abandoned halfway.
05
What about apps and free online readings?
Automated card generators are entertainment, not reflection. There is no conversation, nobody adapting to your situation, and nobody to say 'that question is not one tarot can answer'. Treated as a bit of fun, they are harmless; treated as guidance, they can mislead.
Be especially careful with sites that produce a dramatic result and then offer a paid remedy. Fear followed by a payment link is a sales funnel. A reading that is worth having leaves you clearer about your own thinking, not frightened into a purchase.
06
How do you stay safe online?
Apply the same caution you would to any online service, because personal questions make people less guarded than usual.
01
Book through a real practice
A proper website, a working phone number and a real address tell you who you are dealing with.
02
Share only what is needed
A reading needs your question. It does not need your bank details, your address proof or copies of documents.
03
Do not send money on urgency
Payments demanded urgently to 'avoid' something, or repeated top-ups for extra remedies, are a serious warning sign.
04
Ask about recordings
Agree in advance whether the session is recorded and who keeps the file. Your session should never appear on social media.
05
Keep the same reader
Continuity is worth more than novelty. Someone who remembers your last question can tell you what has actually changed.
07
When is an in-person session better?
Choose in person when the subject is heavy, when you are likely to become emotional, or when you simply want to be somewhere other than your own house while discussing it. Sitting in a calm room with a person in front of you supports a difficult conversation in a way a screen does not.
It is also better if your question is entangled with your home or office, because a visit or a distant Vastu analysis of the space may be the more useful step. And if you are in real distress, please speak to a mental-health professional rather than booking any kind of reading; in India, Tele-MANAS is free on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), 24×7.

Booking a distant session
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers tarot reading at VastuKimaya's office in Andheri East, Mumbai, and for clients in other cities and countries as a distant session.
Distant working is already part of the practice — Vastu analysis is regularly done from floor plans and photographs, and healing therapies such as Reiki and crystal therapy are guided remotely where needed. A reading is treated the same way it would be in the office: the Rider–Waite–Smith 78-card deck, a reflective conversation about a question you bring, adults aged 18 and over, and no predictions of events or dates.
At VastuKimaya, tarot readings are held online only, by video call — Dr. Kimaya does not read cards in the office or on the spot. Readings are charged at ₹1,000 per spread, and the spread that suits your question is agreed on the first call.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is an online tarot reading less effective than in person?
Not in substance. The conversation, the spread and what you take away are the same. In-person sessions mainly offer a calmer atmosphere and are preferable for heavier subjects.
Can the reader shuffle the cards for me if I am not there?
Yes, that is the normal arrangement for a distant session. Many readers will show you the deck and the spread on video as they work.
Are free online tarot apps accurate?
They are entertainment rather than reflection. There is no conversation, no adaptation to your situation and nobody to decline a question tarot cannot answer.
What if the call drops in the middle?
Agree a fallback number before you start. A dropped call is a technical problem, not a sign about your question, and the session simply continues.
Should I record my reading?
Only with the reader's agreement, and keep the file private. Many people find written notes more useful than a recording they never play back.
