Which Crystal for What: A Beginner's Guide

The stones people ask about most, what each is traditionally associated with, where they are placed in a home, how to avoid being overcharged, and what crystals are not for.

Which Crystal for What: A Beginner's Guide

01

Start with what this is and is not

Crystals — रत्न (ratna) — are used in this practice as part of an arrangement — something placed in a particular zone of a home, for a particular reason, alongside changes to light, colour and placement. They are not medicine.

No crystal treats, cures or diagnoses any illness, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either mistaken or selling. If you have a medical or psychological concern, see a doctor. What follows is a set of traditional associations, offered as that and nothing more.

02

The stones people ask about most

There are hundreds in circulation and perhaps eight that do most of the work. A beginner does not need a collection.

These are the ones that come up on almost every consultation.

  • Clear quartz — the general-purpose stone, used where no specific association is wanted. If you buy one thing, this is usually it.
  • Amethyst — traditionally associated with calm and rest. Commonly placed in a bedroom.
  • Citrine — associated with work, enterprise and money matters. Often kept in a workspace or a cash drawer.
  • Rose quartz — associated with relationships and warmth, including towards yourself. Usually the bedroom or a shared living space.
  • Black tourmaline — associated with protection and with absorbing what is unsettled. Commonly kept near an entrance.
  • Obsidian — similar protective association, with a grounding quality; usually placed low and kept to one.
  • Selenite — associated with clearing, and used to clean other stones. Keep it dry; it dissolves in water.
  • Green aventurine — associated with steady growth and opportunity rather than sudden gain.

03

Where they go matters as much as which one

This is the part most online guides leave out, and it is the part a Vastu practitioner is actually interested in. A stone in a drawer is doing nothing; a stone in the right zone of a room is part of an arrangement.

The broad conventions follow the directions rather than the stones.

  • North and north-east — kept light and open; clear quartz, amethyst and selenite sit comfortably here.
  • South-east — the fire and finance zone in a home; citrine is the conventional choice.
  • South-west — the heaviest, most settled zone; rose quartz for the main bedroom, grounding stones generally.
  • Near the main door — black tourmaline is the usual placement, kept low and out of the way.
  • A work desk — citrine to the north, and nothing in front of you that gets in the way of working.

04

How many, and how much to spend

Two or three stones, placed deliberately, are worth more than twenty in a bowl. A bowl of mixed crystals on a shelf is decoration, which is fine, but it is not what this practice is doing.

On price: crystals are sold at wildly varying prices and the market has a good deal of misrepresentation in it. A few things protect you.

  • Be sceptical of dyed stones sold as natural. Very vivid, uniform colour at a low price usually means dyed.
  • Much of what is sold as citrine is heat-treated amethyst. It is not a scandal, but it should not carry a premium.
  • Size does not increase significance. A small stone placed well is not inferior to a large one.
  • Be wary of anyone who tells you your home has a serious problem and that only an expensive stone will fix it.
  • You do not need a certificate for a stone you are placing in your own home.

05

Looking after them

Stones are cleaned periodically in most traditions, and the usual methods are simple: a few hours on a selenite plate, overnight in moonlight, or a short period in indirect sunlight.

Two practical cautions. Selenite dissolves in water, so never soak it. And several stones, including amethyst and rose quartz, fade with long exposure to direct sunlight, so a windowsill in a Mumbai summer is not a good permanent home for them.

06

If you want it done properly

In a consultation, crystals are chosen after the compass reading rather than before, because which zone needs support is decided by the home rather than by a list. That usually results in fewer stones than people expect.

Consultations are available in person across Mumbai and Thane, and online anywhere in India or abroad. The first call is free, and you will be told if crystals are not the thing your home actually needs.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which crystal should a beginner buy first?

Clear quartz is the usual starting point because it carries no specific association. Beyond that, choose by what you want to support rather than by collecting.

Where should crystals be placed in a home?

By zone rather than by room. Clear quartz and amethyst in the north or north-east, citrine in the south-east or on a work desk, rose quartz in the south-west bedroom, black tourmaline near the entrance.

Can crystals heal an illness?

No. They carry traditional associations, not medical properties. For any medical or psychological concern, see a doctor.

How can I tell if a crystal is dyed?

Very vivid, perfectly uniform colour at a low price is the usual sign. Much of what is sold as citrine is also heat-treated amethyst, which should not carry a premium.

How many crystals do I actually need?

Two or three placed deliberately do more than a bowlful. In a consultation, stones are chosen after the compass reading, which usually means fewer than people expect.
