Vastu for Good Health: Zones That Support Wellbeing

01

Can Vastu support good health?

Vastu can support a sense of wellbeing by creating a home that is light, airy, orderly and restful, which makes healthy routines easier to keep. It is a traditional science of space, not a medical treatment, and it works well alongside a doctor's advice, good food, movement and sleep.

Please keep this in mind throughout this article: Vastu, Reiki and crystals complement and do not replace medical or psychological care. If you or a family member is unwell, consult a qualified doctor, and never stop medication or treatment because of a Vastu change.

02

Which direction is linked with health in Vastu?

The North-East is the zone most closely linked with health and clarity in Vastu. Known as ईशान्य (Ishanya), it is associated with the water element and with Isha, and it is traditionally kept the cleanest, lightest and most open part of the home.

The other elements also play a part. पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements) are water in the North-East, fire in the South-East, air in the North-West, earth in the South-West and space at the centre. A home in which each element is in balance is believed to feel more harmonious for the people living in it.

03

How should you care for the North-East zone?

Keep the North-East clean, uncluttered and full of natural light. This is one of the simplest and most meaningful things you can do for the feel of your home.

  • Remove heavy storage

Shift heavy cupboards, lofts full of old items and exercise equipment away from this corner if you can.

  • Let the morning light in

Open curtains in the morning and let fresh air flow through the North and East windows.

  • A place for prayer or quiet

A small pooja corner or a meditation spot here suits the calm quality of the zone.

  • Water, cleanly kept

A copper or glass vessel of fresh water or a small plant can be placed here and refreshed daily.

  • If a toilet is here

Keep the door closed, the space dry and clean, and ask an expert about suitable remedies.

04

Why is the centre of the home important for wellbeing?

The centre of the home, the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan), is the space element's zone, and Vastu recommends keeping it open, light and free of heavy objects. It is thought of as the point from which energy spreads to every room.

In a flat, the centre often falls in the passage or living area. Avoid placing a heavy dining table, storage unit or large pillar-like cabinet exactly there. A light rug, soft lighting and an open walkway are enough.

05

How do the kitchen and bedroom affect health in Vastu?

The kitchen and bedroom matter because they relate to how we eat and how we rest. A South-East kitchen, where the cook faces East, is considered ideal; the North-West is an acceptable alternative.

Keep the stove and sink slightly apart, since fire and water are opposing elements, and keep the kitchen clean and well ventilated. In the bedroom, the South-West is ideal for the master bedroom, and sleeping with the head towards the South or East is recommended. Avoid sleeping directly under a beam, keep the space under the bed clear, and move bright screens away from the bed at night.

06

What daily habits make a home feel healthier?

Daily habits often matter more than any single remedy, because the energy of a home is shaped by how it is lived in every day.

  • Air and light

Ventilate each room daily, especially in Mumbai's humid monsoon months, to prevent damp and mould.

  • Fix leaks promptly

Dripping taps and seepage create damp corners that feel heavy and are unhealthy too.

  • Declutter in small steps

Clear one drawer or shelf a day rather than waiting for a big clean-up.

  • Plants that are cared for

Healthy green plants in the North or East bring freshness; remove dried or dying ones.

  • Quiet moments

A few minutes of stillness, prayer or chanting ॐ शान्तिः (Om Shanti, a prayer for peace) sets a calmer tone.

07

Which healing therapies can complement Vastu for wellbeing?

Gentle therapies such as Reiki, crystal therapy, colour therapy, sound and salt therapy can complement Vastu by adding a sense of calm and balance to a space. At VastuKimaya these are always non-structural and chosen for the specific home.

For example, soft greens and blues are associated with rest, a salt bowl in a heavy corner is a traditional cleansing practice, and Reiki is often chosen for relaxation. None of these are medical treatments, and they are ideally seen as supportive additions to your family's healthcare.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which zone of the house is related to health in Vastu?

The North-East is most closely associated with health and clarity in Vastu, and the centre of the home is also important. Both should be kept clean, light and uncluttered.

Can Vastu treat illness?

No. Vastu does not treat illness. It can help create a calmer, more balanced home that supports wellbeing, but it complements and does not replace medical care.

Which direction should a sick person sleep in?

Sleeping with the head towards the South or East is generally recommended in Vastu. Always follow the doctor's guidance about rest, position and care first.

Is a toilet in the North-East bad for health?

A toilet in the North-East is considered a significant Vastu imbalance, but it can be balanced with non-structural remedies. Keep it clean, dry and closed, and consult an expert for suitable remedies.

Which plants are good for health as per Vastu?

Tulsi, in the North, East or North-East, and other healthy green plants are considered supportive. Avoid thorny plants indoors and remove plants that have dried.
