Tiger's Eye: Meaning, Benefits and Placement

Tiger's eye is the golden-brown stone with a moving band of light. Here is what it is, what it is traditionally associated with, where to place it by Vastu zone, and how to spot a fake.

Tiger's Eye: Meaning, Benefits and Placement

01

What is tiger's eye?

Tiger's eye is a variety of quartz with fine, parallel fibrous inclusions. Those fibres give it golden and brown bands and a silky shine.

When you tilt a polished piece, a band of light slides across the surface. Gemmologists call this effect chatoyancy, from the French for 'cat's eye'.

Tiger's eye is a fairly hard stone, which is why it is so widely used for beads, pendants and carved pieces.

02

What are the traditional tiger eye stone benefits?

Tiger eye stone benefits are traditional associations, not proven effects. The stone is linked with confidence, grounding and focus.

These are meanings people attach to the stone. Many people find it a helpful reminder of the quality they are working on. No stone changes your health, your income or your luck.

  • 01

    Confidence

Traditionally associated with courage and steady nerves, for example before an interview or a presentation.

  • 02

    Grounding

Its earthy colours are linked with feeling settled and practical.

  • 03

    Focus

Often kept nearby during study or work as a cue to return to the task.

03

Where should you place tiger's eye by Vastu zone?

Tiger's eye is most often placed in the South or South-West of a home, or on a work desk. Classical Vastu texts do not mention the stone. This is a modern practice that matches the stone's earthy character to the nature of each zone.

  • 01

    South-West

The zone of the Earth element, linked with stability. A tumbled stone or small carved piece on a shelf here is the usual choice.

  • 02

    South

Chosen by many practitioners for steadiness and confidence. Keep the piece clean and in view, not hidden in clutter.

  • 03

    Work desk

Placed where your eyes fall on it, as a reminder to stay with one task at a time.

04

How do you wear tiger's eye?

Tiger's eye is usually worn as a bead bracelet, a pendant or a ring. Choose whichever you will actually keep on.

By modern crystal-healing convention, a stone worn for confidence and action goes on the right wrist. That is a custom, not a rule, so comfort can decide.

Take jewellery off for bathing, swimming and sleep. This protects the elastic or the setting and keeps the polish bright.

05

How do you cleanse and care for it?

Wipe tiger's eye with a soft, dry cloth, and store it away from harder gemstones that may scratch it. A quick rinse in plain water is fine for a loose polished stone, as long as you dry it straight away.

Avoid long soaking, salt water and household cleaners, and keep dyed pieces out of strong sunlight because the colour can fade. For traditional cleansing, many people use moonlight, incense smoke or the sound of a bell.

06

How do you spot a dyed or glass fake?

A genuine tiger's eye has uneven, slightly wavy bands that shift as you turn it. Fakes tend to look too perfect or too bright.

  • 01

    One sharp, straight line

Fibre-optic glass sold as 'cat's eye' shows a single very neat band and perfectly even colour.

  • 02

    Unnatural colours

Bright pink, purple, green or electric blue pieces are dyed stone or glass.

  • 03

    Colour in the cracks

Dye collects in tiny cracks and around drill holes. Look closely at the bead holes.

  • 04

    Red tiger's eye

Most red pieces are golden stone that has been heated. That is acceptable if the seller tells you.

  • 05

    Weight and feel

Real stone feels cool and fairly heavy. Plastic feels light and warms quickly.

07

Is tiger's eye safe to handle?

Polished tiger's eye is generally safe to handle and wear. The fibres are locked inside solid quartz.

A few sensible limits apply. Do not make gem water or elixirs from tiger's eye, and never drink water a stone has been sitting in. Do not let children put it in their mouths, and keep small tumbled stones and beads away from toddlers, as they are a choking hazard. Do not cut, grind or sand the stone at home, because stone dust should not be breathed in.

Tiger's eye is not a remedy for any illness. Crystals complement medical care and do not replace it. For any health concern, please see a doctor.

08

When to ask for guidance

Ask for guidance when you want a stone placed as part of a wider plan for your home or office, not as a single object on a shelf.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers crystal therapy at VastuKimaya in Andheri East, Mumbai, as one of several non-structural Vastu remedies. You can explore stones with the crystal finder first, or book an appointment to discuss your space.

Questions

Frequently asked

Who should wear tiger's eye?

Anyone who likes the stone can wear tiger's eye. It is traditionally chosen by people who want a reminder of confidence, steadiness or focus, such as students and people starting a new role. There is no rule about who may or may not wear it, and it suits both men and women.

Which hand should tiger's eye be worn on?

By modern crystal-healing convention, tiger's eye is worn on the right wrist, because the right side is linked with action and giving out. This is a popular custom, not a classical rule. Wearing it on the left wrist is equally fine if that is more comfortable for you.

Can tiger's eye go in water?

A brief rinse in plain water will not harm a polished tiger's eye, if you dry it straight away. Avoid long soaking and salt water, and take bracelets off before bathing because water weakens the elastic. Never use the stone to make drinking water or elixirs.

Is red or blue tiger's eye natural?

Blue-grey tiger's eye, sold as hawk's eye, occurs naturally. Red tiger's eye is usually golden stone that has been heat-treated to deepen the colour, which is acceptable when the seller says so. Very bright blue, pink, green or purple pieces are dyed, or are glass.

Where should I keep tiger's eye at home?

The South-West and the South are the zones most often chosen for tiger's eye, along with a work or study desk. Keep it on a clean, open surface where you will see it. Place it out of reach of young children and pets, as small stones can be swallowed.

Can tiger's eye bring money or success?

No stone can bring money or success. Tiger's eye is traditionally associated with confidence and focus, and many people use it as a reminder to act steadily on their plans. The results come from the work you do. Be careful of any seller who promises wealth from a stone.
