Things Keep Breaking at Home? The Vastu View and Practical Fixes

01

Why does it feel like everything at home keeps breaking?

First the mixer stops, then the geyser, then a glass shatters, the tap starts leaking and the television goes dark. When things break one after another, it is tiring, expensive and a little unnerving. Many people start to wonder whether the home is trying to tell them something.

It is a fair question, and there is a calm answer. Most runs of breakages have ordinary, fixable causes. Vastu has a view too, and it is a practical one: look after your space and it looks after you. Neither involves anything to fear.

02

What practical causes should you rule out first?

Rule out electrical supply, damp, water quality and simple age first, because these explain most repeated breakages. A qualified electrician or plumber can usually find the pattern in one visit.

  • 01

    Voltage fluctuation

Sudden surges and dips damage appliances. Ask about a stabiliser for large appliances and surge protectors for electronics.

  • 02

    Poor earthing

Weak earthing can cause repeated failures and is a safety risk. Have it tested, especially in older buildings.

  • 03

    Overloaded sockets

Several heavy appliances on one extension board heat up wiring and plugs.

  • 04

    Damp and sea air

Mumbai's humidity and, near the coast, salty air corrode metal parts, hinges and circuit boards.

  • 05

    Hard water

Scale build-up shortens the life of geysers, washing machines, taps and water purifiers.

  • 06

    Age and wear

Appliances bought together often fail around the same time. That is a timing pattern, not a sign.

03

What is the Vastu view of repeated breakages?

Vastu traditionally sees repeated breakages as a reminder to look at the balance of particular zones and at how the home is being cared for, not as a bad omen. The focus is on restoring order and flow.

The आग्नेय (Agneya, the South-East) carries the Fire element and is linked with electricity, cooking and heat. Vastu checks whether heavy electrical equipment, the inverter or the meter sits comfortably there, and whether water elements clash with it. The North-West, the zone of वायु (Vayu, the wind), is linked with movement, so things that move, such as fans, washing machines and vehicles, are often considered here. Read more about the South-East fire zone and where to place the meter, inverter and DB box.

04

Should you keep broken things at home?

Vastu tradition advises repairing or releasing broken things rather than keeping them, because objects that no longer work are linked with stagnation. This is also simple good housekeeping.

  • 01

    Stopped clocks

Repair them or change the battery. A stopped clock is traditionally seen as time standing still. See wall clock Vastu.

  • 02

    Cracked mirrors and glass

Replace cracked mirrors and chipped glasses; they are also a safety hazard.

  • 03

    Broken idols and pictures

Release a damaged idol respectfully, as your family tradition suggests, often by immersion or leaving it at a temple.

  • 04

    Dead appliances

Send them for e-waste recycling instead of storing them in the loft or under the bed.

  • 05

    Leaking taps

Fix leaks promptly. In Vastu, constant dripping is linked with things slowly draining away.

05

What can you do today about things breaking at home?

Today you can make a list, book one repair and clear out what is already broken. Small, visible action quickly changes how a home feels.

  • 01

    Make a breakage list

Note what broke, when and where. A pattern, such as everything on one circuit or one wall, points to the cause.

  • 02

    Book the electrician

Ask for a voltage, earthing and wiring check, and fit surge protection.

  • 03

    Clear one storage area

Empty the loft or the space under one bed of broken and unused items.

  • 04

    Refresh the space

Open windows, mop with a little sea salt in water and light a diya at dusk to mark a fresh start.

06

Which service fits this: Vastu, Reiki, tarot or crystals?

For things breaking at home, an electrician or plumber comes first, then Vastu to check the zones involved. Reiki, tarot and crystals play a smaller part here.

  • 01

    Vastu

Checks the South-East, North-West and the placement of heavy appliances, and suggests non-structural remedies.

  • 02

    Reiki

Reiki Vastu can help if the home also feels heavy or tense after a difficult run.

  • 03

    Tarot

Not suited to explaining breakages. It is better kept for decisions you are facing.

  • 04

    Crystals

Can support a zone's balance, but never fix wiring, damp or water problems.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is it a bad sign if things keep breaking at home?

It is not a bad omen. Repeated breakages usually have practical causes such as voltage fluctuation, damp or age. Vastu treats them as a reminder to check the electrical zone, clear broken items and care for the home.

What does Vastu say about broken items in the house?

Vastu advises repairing or removing broken items, such as stopped clocks, cracked mirrors and dead appliances, because they are traditionally linked with stagnation. Damaged idols are released respectfully according to family custom.

Which direction is linked with electrical appliances in Vastu?

The South-East, the zone of Agni and the Fire element, is linked with electricity, heat and cooking. Heavy electrical equipment and the kitchen are traditionally placed there.

Why do my appliances keep failing in Mumbai?

In Mumbai, humidity, salty sea air, hard water and voltage fluctuation commonly shorten appliance life. A stabiliser, surge protection, regular servicing and keeping appliances dry help a great deal.
