Reiki for Children: Gentle Energy Support
Reiki is a quiet, hands-light practice that many families use to help children relax. What Reiki for children involves, how sessions are adapted, and how it fits alongside a child's usual care.

01
What is Reiki for children?
Reiki for children is the same gentle Japanese energy practice used with adults, adapted to a child's age, attention span and comfort. The word Reiki comes from 'Rei' (universal) and 'Ki' (life energy). A practitioner channels this energy through hands placed lightly on, or just above, the body.
There is no massage, no pressure, no medicine and no need to undress. For a child, a session can feel like a few quiet minutes of rest with a calm adult nearby. In Indian terms, we might say it supports the flow of प्राण (prana, life energy) and a sense of शांति (shanti, peace).
Reiki is a complementary wellness practice. It does not diagnose or treat illness, and it never replaces a paediatrician, a child psychologist or any treatment a child is receiving.
02
Is Reiki safe for children?
Reiki is generally considered safe for children because it is non-invasive and involves only light touch or no touch at all. The most important safeguards are consent, a parent's presence and continuing the child's normal medical care.
Before a session, parents should share any health conditions, medication or ongoing therapy. If a child is unwell, has a fever or new symptoms, the first step is always a doctor. Reiki can then be offered, if the family wishes, as a calming addition.
01
Parental consent
Reiki for a minor is given only with a parent's or guardian's consent.
02
The child's own comfort
Even young children should be asked if they are comfortable, and allowed to say no or stop at any time.
03
Parent in the room
A parent usually stays with the child throughout an in-person session.
04
Hands-off option
If a child prefers not to be touched, the practitioner can hold the hands just above the body.
03
How is a Reiki session adapted for a child?
A Reiki session for a child is shorter, softer and more flexible than an adult session. Children rarely lie still for long, and that is perfectly fine.
01
Shorter duration
Sessions are kept brief so the child doesn't become restless.
02
Any comfortable position
A child may sit on a parent's lap, lie on a sofa, or even draw quietly while receiving Reiki.
03
Simple explanations
The practitioner explains in child-friendly words: 'I'm going to rest my hands here and you can just relax.'
04
Fewer hand positions
Focus is often on the head, shoulders, back and feet rather than a full sequence.
05
Gentle ending
A glass of water and a few quiet minutes afterwards help the child settle back into the day.
04
When do families consider Reiki for children?
Families usually consider Reiki during phases of change or pressure, when a child seems unsettled and parents want a calm, gentle form of support. It is not about fixing the child; it is about helping them feel more at ease.
01
Exam time
A calm session before or during exam season, together with good sleep and routine.
02
Big changes
A new school, a house move, a new sibling or a family transition.
03
Restlessness at bedtime
As part of a soothing wind-down routine, alongside advice from the paediatrician if sleep problems continue.
04
Busy, overstimulated days
Children with packed schedules sometimes simply need quiet time.
05
Emotional ups and downs
Alongside, never instead of, support from a counsellor or child psychologist where needed.
05
What can a child feel during Reiki?
A child may feel warmth, tingling, sleepiness or simply nothing in particular — all of these are normal. Some children fall asleep; others chatter for a few minutes and then grow quiet.
Parents often notice their child seems calmer or rests well afterwards, though every child is different and no particular outcome can be promised. The value is often in the experience itself: a few minutes of calm attention in a busy world.
06
Can distance Reiki be given to a child?
Yes, distance Reiki can be given to a child, with the parent's consent, while the child rests at home. Reiki traditions teach that the energy is not limited by distance, so a session can be held for a child in another part of Mumbai, elsewhere in India or overseas.
For a distance session, the parent agrees a time with the practitioner, shares the child's name and, if they wish, a photograph. The child can be resting, reading or drifting off to sleep at that time. This suits families who find travel difficult or whose child is more comfortable at home.
07
How can parents create a calm space at home?
Parents can support calm at home with a peaceful, uncluttered children's room and simple routines. Vastu offers a few practical guidelines.
01
Room direction
The West or North-West suits a children's room, and the East suits children who love studying.
02
Sleeping direction
Head towards the South or East while sleeping.
03
Study direction
Face East or North while studying.
04
Soft colours
Light, cheerful colours such as pale green, light blue or soft yellow.
05
Screens out at night
Keep phones and tablets outside the bedroom at bedtime where possible.
06
A gentle crystal
Rose Quartz on a shelf out of reach of small children, who may put stones in their mouths.
08
When to book a Reiki session
Consider booking a Reiki session when your child is going through a demanding phase and you would like a gentle, calming addition to the care they already receive. Always speak to your child's doctor first about any health or developmental concern.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers Reiki for individuals and families, in person at the Andheri East office in Mumbai or as distance Reiki. If the home itself feels heavy or unsettled, she can also look at the children's room through Vastu and Reiki Vastu, using non-structural remedies.
Questions
Frequently asked

No, a child does not need to lie perfectly still. They can sit on a parent's lap, rest on a sofa or even draw quietly while receiving Reiki.
Can Reiki replace medicine for my child?
No. Reiki is a complementary relaxation practice and never replaces a doctor, medicine or therapy. Please continue all medical care and consult your paediatrician about any health concern.
Can Reiki help my child before exams?
Many families use Reiki as a calming support before exams, together with good sleep, meals and a study routine. It supports relaxation but does not promise particular results.
Is distance Reiki suitable for children?
Yes, distance Reiki can be given with a parent's consent while the child rests at home. It suits families who find travel difficult or whose child prefers familiar surroundings.
