01
When can you do griha pravesh after Chaturmas in 2026?
गृह प्रवेश (Griha Pravesh, the housewarming ceremony) traditionally resumes after Prabodhini Ekadashi, also called Dev Uthani Ekadashi, which most panchangs place around 19–20 November 2026, so many families plan housewarmings from late November into early 2027.
The four months before it are चातुर्मास (Chaturmas, the four holy months), when Lord Vishnu is believed to rest and families traditionally postpone weddings and housewarmings. प्रबोधिनी एकादशी (Prabodhini Ekadashi, the Ekadashi of awakening), known in Maharashtra as Kartiki Ekadashi, marks the end of that pause, and many homes celebrate Tulsi Vivah around the same time.
This article does not list muhurat dates or times. They vary by city and by family tradition, so please take your griha pravesh muhurat 2026 from your family priest or a reliable panchang for your city. Your priest will also tell you if any weeks in December or January are traditionally avoided in your family's calendar.
02
Why should you plan a housewarming early in the wedding season?
Plan early because the weeks after Dev Uthani Ekadashi are also the start of the wedding season, so priests, caterers, decorators and movers get booked quickly.
Starting four to six weeks ahead keeps the day calm, and calm is the mood you want to carry into a new home. The Vastu basics of the ceremony itself are covered in our Vastu tips for a new home and griha pravesh; this checklist is about timing and logistics.
03
What should you do four weeks before griha pravesh?
Four weeks before, fix the muhurat with your priest, book the priest and caterer, and make sure all civil, electrical and plumbing work will be finished well before the date.
01
Fix the muhurat
Ask your priest for two or three suitable options, so you have a fallback if work runs late.
02
Set a finish date for work
Painting, carpentry and leak repairs should end at least a week before the ceremony, not the night before.
03
Confirm the directions
Take compass readings so you know the North-East for the puja, the South-East for the stove and the South-West for the master bed.
04
Inform the society
Share the date with the committee and ask about lift use, guest parking, music timings and their rules on fire rituals inside flats.
04
What should you prepare two weeks before the housewarming?
Two weeks before, plan the puja space, the guest flow and the furniture layout, so nothing heavy has to be moved on the day. A clear North-East is the heart of the preparation, because that is where the puja and the कलश (kalash, the sacred water pot) belong; our guide to kalash sthapana explains its placement.
01
Furniture on paper
Mark where the bed, wardrobes, sofa and mandir will go by direction before the movers arrive.
02
Guests in a compact flat
Plan seating along the South and West walls and keep the centre free so people can move around the puja.
03
Shoes
Arrange shoe space to one side of the entrance so the doorway stays clear, following society rules on corridor use.
04
A gift corner
Choose a table in the South-West or West for gifts, so they do not pile up in the North-East.
05
What should you do in the last week before griha pravesh?
In the last week, deep-clean the flat, cleanse the space and gather everything for the puja, so the day before stays quiet. Clean every room, loft, window and balcony, and clear away debris left by contractors.
Open the windows, mop with a little sea salt in water, and ring a bell through each room. Buy fresh flowers, mango leaves and the toran a day before, and pack a bag with documents, medicines and clothes for the first night. If relatives ask what to bring, share our note on housewarming gifts as per Vastu.
06
Is it safe to do a havan in a flat?
A small havan can be done safely in a flat if the society allows it, the room is well ventilated and fire safety is planned in advance. Ask the committee first, since some societies have rules on open fire inside flats.
01
Ventilate
Open windows, run the exhaust fan, and keep the havan kund on a fire-safe base away from curtains and wooden furniture.
02
Keep it small
Use modest amounts of ghee, samidha and camphor, keep water or sand close by, and seat children and elders away from the smoke.
03
A simpler option
If a havan is not possible, many priests perform the puja with a lamp, the kalash and mantras alone.
07
What is the order of rituals on the griha pravesh day?
On the day, keep to a simple order: decorate the entrance, enter at the muhurat, perform the puja in the North-East and boil milk in the kitchen.
Hang a fresh toran, light a diya at the door, and let the head of the family or the couple enter first, often with the right foot and the kalash. After the puja, boil milk until it rises as a sign of abundance, and serve the first food from the new kitchen, even if it is only prasad. For a couple setting up their first home together, our newlyweds' home guide explains bedroom and décor choices to make once the guests have gone.
08
What should you do after griha pravesh in the first week?
In the first week, stay in the new home, light a lamp each evening and unpack the kitchen, mandir and beds first, so the home starts being lived in straight away. Many families follow the custom of spending the first night in the home after the ceremony rather than locking it up.
If you cannot move fully yet, visit each evening to light the lamp and open the windows. If sleep is restless, check the bed direction first; if a corner feels heavy, clear it and add light.
09
When should you consult a Vastu expert before a housewarming?
Consult a Vastu expert four to six weeks before the griha pravesh, ideally before the carpenter starts, so the bed, mandir, stove and wardrobes are placed right from the first day.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya visits new and redeveloped flats across Mumbai from her Andheri East office for on-site compass measurement, and also reviews floor plans and photographs through distant consultation. VastuKimaya does not fix muhurat dates; that remains with your family priest. The focus is the home itself: directions, placement and non-structural remedies.
Questions
Frequently asked
When is Dev Uthani Ekadashi in 2026?
Most panchangs place Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi around 19–20 November 2026, with the exact date and timing varying by city and calendar. Check a panchang for your city or ask your family priest.
Can we do griha pravesh during Chaturmas?
Traditionally, many families avoid griha pravesh during Chaturmas and wait until after Prabodhini Ekadashi. Customs differ, so if you must move earlier, ask your family priest how your tradition handles it.
How do I find the griha pravesh muhurat for 2026?
Ask your family priest or consult a reliable panchang for your city. Muhurats vary by location and tradition.
Is griha pravesh necessary for a flat?
It is a tradition rather than a requirement, but many families perform griha pravesh in a new or redeveloped flat to begin on a peaceful note. Even a simple puja, a lamp in the North-East and boiling milk mark the start.
Should we stay in the new house on the night of griha pravesh?
Many families follow the custom of staying in the new home on the first night, or at least keeping a lamp lit, rather than leaving it locked and empty straight after the puja. Follow your family's tradition.
Can we do griha pravesh before the furniture arrives?
Yes. Many families perform griha pravesh in an empty or partly furnished flat and move in over the following days. An empty home is also easier to clean and cleanse before the ceremony.
