Newlyweds' Home Vastu: Setting Up Your First Home

01

Why does Vastu matter when you set up your first home?

Vastu matters in a first home because the habits and layout you choose now tend to stay for years. It is far easier to place the bed, the mandir and the cupboards thoughtfully at the start than to rearrange everything later.

Vastu cannot replace communication, patience and respect between partners — those build a marriage. What a harmonious space offers is a calm backdrop that makes it easier to rest, talk and enjoy time together.

02

Which bedroom should a newly married couple use?

The South-West bedroom is traditionally recommended for a married couple, as it is the zone of earth and stability. In joint families where the elders already occupy the South-West, the couple can choose a room in the South or West.

The North-West, linked with Vayu, the air element, is associated with movement and is often suggested for guests or children rather than for a couple's long-term room. If the North-West is the only option, a few remedies and good habits can balance it.

03

How should the bed be placed?

Place the bed so that you sleep with your heads towards the South or East, with the headboard against a solid wall. A strong, well-made wooden bed is preferred.

Vastu specifically suggests a single mattress on a double bed rather than two separate mattresses, as a gap between mattresses is associated with distance between partners. Avoid a bed directly under a beam, and keep the space under the bed free of old luggage, broken items or clutter.

04

Which colours, décor and mirrors suit a couple's bedroom?

Soft, warm colours such as light pink, peach, cream and soft earthy tones suit a couple's bedroom and help it feel cosy and loving. Avoid large areas of black, dark grey or harsh red.

Décor choices that support a warm mood:

  • 01

    Photographs

Happy pictures of the two of you, or a pair of lovebirds or mandarin ducks, on the South-West wall.

  • 02

    Pairs

Pairs of bedside lamps or cushions reflect togetherness.

  • 03

    Avoid lonely imagery

Single figures, sad faces, war scenes or wild animals are better kept out of the bedroom.

  • 04

    Mirrors

No mirror should reflect the bed. If the dressing-table mirror faces the bed, cover it at night.

  • 05

    Crystals

A pair of Rose Quartz pieces in the South-West of the bedroom is a popular choice for warmth and affection.

  • 06

    Electronics

Keep the television and work laptops out of the bedroom where possible, or switch them off and cover them at night.

05

How should the rest of the first home be set up?

Set up the rest of the home around the standard Vastu zones, which give every activity a natural place.

  • 01

    Kitchen

South-East is ideal, North-West acceptable; cook facing East.

  • 02

    Mandir

North-East, kept simple, clean and lit each evening.

  • 03

    Living room

North, East or North-East, with heavier sofas along the South or West walls.

  • 04

    Locker

Keep valuables and important papers in a cupboard that opens towards the North, the direction of Kubera.

  • 05

    Centre

Keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) open and light, without heavy furniture.

  • 06

    Entrance

Bright, clean, with a toran and a name plate showing both names.

06

What rituals help bless a new home for a couple?

A गृह प्रवेश (Griha Pravesh, the house-warming ceremony) is the traditional way to begin life in a new home, performed according to your family's customs and on a date chosen with your family priest.

Beyond the ceremony, small daily rituals build a calm atmosphere: lighting a diya together in the evening, keeping fresh flowers in the living room, and cooking and eating at least one meal together. Many couples chant a short prayer for peace such as ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः (Om Shanti Shanti Shanti — peace, peace, peace). These simple habits give the home a feeling of शांति (shanti, peace).

07

What if you live in a rented flat or with family?

You can still apply Vastu in a rented flat or a room in the family home, because most of it is about placement, colours and habits rather than construction. Bed direction, mirrors, décor and clutter are all in your control.

In a joint family, focus on your own room and on shared spaces you help maintain. Be respectful of elders' preferences — harmony in the household matters more than a perfect layout.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert before you finalise a flat, before interiors begin, or when your new home simply does not feel settled. Planning early saves you from redoing carpentry or wardrobes later.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar consults on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office and offers distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. You receive a personalised written report with non-structural remedies, suitable for owned and rented homes, and follow-up support.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction should a newly married couple sleep?

A newly married couple is advised to sleep with their heads towards the South or East, ideally in a South-West bedroom. Avoid the head towards the North.

Should a married couple use one mattress or two?

Vastu suggests one mattress on a double bed rather than two separate mattresses. The gap between two mattresses is associated with distance between partners.

Is a North-West bedroom okay for newlyweds?

A North-West bedroom is traditionally suggested for guests or children rather than a couple's permanent room. If it is your only option, use grounding colours, keep the room tidy and consider remedies after assessment.

Which photographs should newlyweds keep in the bedroom?

Happy photographs of the couple, or images of pairs such as lovebirds, suit the South-West wall of the bedroom. Avoid lonely, violent or sad imagery.

Can Vastu solve relationship problems?

Vastu can help create a calmer, more harmonious home, but it cannot replace honest conversation or professional support. If difficulties persist, consider speaking with a qualified couples counsellor.
