What should you check before moving into a new home?
Before moving in, check the directions and the placement of the key areas, because this determines where everything else should go.
Main entrance
Note the direction and Pada of the main door. North, North-East and East entrances are favourable; others can be balanced with remedies.
Kitchen
Ideally in the South-East, with the cook facing East. Note where the stove and sink fall.
Master bedroom
Ideally in the South-West. Plan the bed so the head points towards the South.
Toilets
Check whether any toilet falls in the North-East, North or centre, as these need remedies.
Pooja corner
Identify a clean spot in the North-East, North or East, not inside a bedroom or against a toilet wall.

How should you prepare the house before griha pravesh?
- Finish civil work, painting, electrical repairs and leak fixes before the ceremony, so the home is complete when you enter.
- Deep-clean every room, including windows, lofts and balconies, and remove debris left by contractors.
- Open all windows for a day or two to let in sunlight and fresh air.
- Mop floors with water containing a little sea salt as a traditional cleansing step.
- If the home was previously occupied, consider a Reiki space cleansing to clear old energy.
- Make sure the main door opens smoothly, the threshold is intact and the entrance lights work.

What are the Vastu tips for the day of griha pravesh?
On the day, focus on a clean, bright entrance, a calm pooja and a symbolic first use of the kitchen. Families follow their own customs and choose the date with their family priest; the Vastu points below fit alongside those traditions.
Decorate the entrance
Hang a fresh toran of mango leaves or marigolds, draw a rangoli and place a Swastika or Om symbol near the door.
Enter with intention
Many families enter with the right foot first, carrying a kalash or an image of their deity.
Set up the pooja in the North-East
Perform the pooja in the North-East of the home, keeping the area clean and simple.
Boil milk in the kitchen
Boiling milk until it rises is a traditional symbol of abundance. Use the stove in the South-East part of the kitchen if possible.
Keep the home lit
Light a diya and keep the entrance and main rooms bright through the evening.

How should you arrange furniture in a new home as per Vastu?
Place heavy furniture in the South and West and keep the North, East and centre lighter and more open. Doing this while the home is still empty saves effort later.
- Master bed in the South-West bedroom, headboard against the South or West wall.
- Wardrobes and lockers along the South or West walls; lockers can open towards the North.
- Sofas along the South or West walls of the living room, with the TV on the South-East wall.
- Study tables placed so the student faces East or North.
- Keep the centre of the home free of heavy furniture and clutter.
- Do not place a shoe rack right at the main door; keep it to one side.

What should you avoid when moving into a new home?
- Carrying broken, unused or damaged items from the old home — use the move to declutter.
- Leaving the home locked and empty for a long stretch right after griha pravesh, where it can be avoided.
- Placing the pooja inside a bedroom or on a wall shared with a toilet.
- Mirrors that reflect the bed, or a bed placed directly under a beam.
- Heavy storage or dustbins in the North-East.

What should you do in the first few weeks after moving in?
In the first weeks, notice how each room feels and make gentle adjustments. If sleep is restless, check the bed direction; if a corner feels heavy, declutter it, improve the light and consider a salt bowl or a suitable crystal.
