Diwali Vastu: Cleaning, Lighting and Lakshmi Pooja Direction

Vastu matters at Diwali because the festival is centred on welcoming लक्ष्मी (Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity) into a clean, bright and well-ordered home — exactly what Vastu encourages all year. Tradition holds that Lakshmi enters homes that are clean, lit and welcoming.

The weeks before Diwali are an ideal time to reset the energy of your home. Cleaning, repairing, decorating and lighting are all ways of refreshing प्राण (prana, life energy) and beginning the new season with intention.

Clean your home for Diwali by working zone by zone, starting with the most important areas: the North-East, the North and the centre. Go beyond dusting — this is the season to let go.

Decorate the main entrance so it feels clean, bright and welcoming, because Vastu treats it as the mouth through which energy and prosperity enter the home.

Wash the door and threshold, polish the nameplate, and replace a worn-out doormat. Hang a fresh toran of mango leaves or marigolds across the upper door frame. Draw a rangoli at the threshold with bright colours or flower petals. Place a pair of diyas on either side of the door each evening, and keep the entrance lobby of your flat free of shoe racks and clutter during the festival days. In a society building, a small rangoli or a pair of diyas just inside the door works well where corridor space is shared.

Diyas and lights are traditionally placed at the main entrance, in the pooja area, in the North-East and in every corner of the home, so no part of the house remains dark on Diwali night.

Lakshmi Pooja is ideally performed in the North-East of the home, or in the North, with the idol facing West or South so that the family faces East or North while praying. The North-East is the zone of Isha and spiritual clarity, and the North is Kubera's zone of wealth, making both meaningful choices.

Place the idols or images of Lakshmi and Ganesha on a raised, clean platform covered with a red or yellow cloth, with Ganesha on Lakshmi's left side. Keep a kalash of water, fresh flowers, sweets and a lamp before them. If your mandir is elsewhere in a compact flat, simply make it as clean and bright as possible; devotion matters more than perfect measurements.

Keep money and valuables in a locker or cupboard placed against the South or West wall so that it opens facing North, Kubera's direction. Many families also place new account books, a few coins or jewellery near the Lakshmi idol during the pooja as a symbolic offering, and return them to the locker afterwards.

Clean the locker before Diwali, remove unnecessary papers, and keep a red cloth or a small piece of Citrine inside if you wish, as traditional symbols of prosperity.

You can keep the Diwali energy by continuing a few simple habits after the lights come down. Light a diya at dusk each day. Keep the North-East and entrance clean. Ring a bell or chant a simple mantra such as ॐ श्री महालक्ष्म्यै नमः (Om Shri Mahalakshmyai Namah — salutations to the great Lakshmi) during evening prayer. And avoid letting the clutter you cleared quietly creep back in.

Bright, warm and natural decorations suit Diwali Vastu — marigolds, mango leaves, clay diyas, rangoli colours and soft golden lights. They carry a cheerful, auspicious energy without feeling harsh.

Use yellows, oranges, reds and golds in the living room and entrance for warmth. In the North-East, keep décor light and minimal, with white or pale yellow flowers. Avoid plastic flowers and artificial leaves where you can, and replace fresh flowers once they wilt. Choose rangoli designs with flowing, symmetrical patterns, and refresh them if they get smudged. A few thoughtful touches in the right places create more festive energy than crowding every surface.
