Citrine for Abundance: Where to Place It
Citrine is known as the Merchant's Stone. Here is citrine placement as per Vastu for homes, offices and cash counters, plus where to avoid it and how to care for it.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
What is citrine, and why is it linked with abundance?
Citrine is a yellow to golden-brown variety of quartz, traditionally linked with abundance, prosperity and success. In crystal therapy it is known as the Merchant's Stone or the Stone of Success, and it carries the warm, energising quality of the sun.
Its sunny colour connects it with confidence, motivation, creativity and self-expression. Business owners often keep citrine at their workplace, and students and professionals use it for drive and a positive outlook. It is one of the crystals Dr. Kimaya works with most often for wealth and career concerns.
Citrine supports focus and intention; it does not create money by itself. Its value lies in reinforcing a positive, active mindset alongside real effort.
02
Where should citrine be placed as per Vastu?
Citrine is placed in the North zone of a home or office, the direction ruled by कुबेर (Kubera, the guardian of wealth), to support income, career growth and new opportunities. This is its most common Vastu placement.
Before placing citrine, clean and declutter the chosen spot. A crystal placed among old files, tangled wires or dust sends a mixed message. In a compact Mumbai flat, one well-kept citrine on a North shelf of the living room or study is usually enough; there is no need to place stones in every room.
01
North zone of the home
A citrine cluster or point on a clean shelf in the North part of the living room or study.
02
North zone of the office
In the North of the premises or the North side of a cabin, to support business growth.
03
Work desk
A small tumbled stone or point on your desk, ideally towards its North side, for motivation and clarity.
04
Cash counter
Near the cash drawer or billing area in a shop, often alongside Pyrite.
05
South-East zone
The zone of Agni, where citrine's warm energy is used for financial momentum and stability.
03
Where should citrine not be placed?
Citrine should generally not be placed in the bedroom, because its warm, stimulating energy can feel too active for rest. Keep it in spaces meant for work, study and activity instead.
Also avoid placing citrine in the toilet, on the floor, among clutter or near a dustbin. If the North zone of your home has a toilet, choose a clean shelf on the North wall of the adjoining room rather than placing the crystal inside the bathroom.
For calm and sleep, gentler crystals such as Amethyst or Rose Quartz are more suitable in the bedroom.
04
Which form of citrine should you choose?
The form you choose matters less than its quality and placement, but each shape suits a slightly different use.
Size is less important than people often assume. A modest, clear piece that you notice and care for regularly is more meaningful than a large stone that gathers dust in a corner.
01
Cluster or geode
Radiates energy in many directions. Suits the North zone of a living room or office.
02
Single point or tower
Focuses energy in one direction. Suits a desk or cash counter.
03
Tumbled stone
Small and portable. Can be carried in a wallet or pocket, or kept on a desk.
04
Tree or décor piece
Often used in reception areas, as long as it is kept clean and not cluttered with other objects.
05
How can you tell natural citrine from heat-treated stones?
Natural citrine is usually a pale, soft yellow to honey colour, fairly even throughout, while many stones sold as citrine are heat-treated amethyst with a deep orange or brownish tint and a white base. Heat-treated stones are very common in the market.
Buy from a trusted source and ask whether the stone is natural or treated. Many people still find treated stones pleasant to use, but it is good to know what you are buying. During a consultation, Dr. Kimaya guides clients on selecting crystals suited to their specific zones and concerns.
Check any crystal for cracks and chips before placing it, and handle it with care.
06
How should citrine be cleansed and activated?
Citrine is traditionally said to transmute and ground negative energy rather than absorb it, so it is often described as needing less frequent cleansing than other crystals. Still, a gentle periodic cleanse keeps it bright and fresh.
Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Use sound, such as a bell or singing bowl, or place it briefly on a bed of dry salt in a separate bowl. Avoid long exposure to strong sunlight, as natural citrine can fade over time.
Hold the stone, breathe slowly and set a clear, realistic intention, such as steady growth in your work or wise financial decisions. At VastuKimaya, crystals are activated with Reiki and Vedic mantras before being placed. Pairing the intention with a सङ्कल्प (sankalpa, a sincere resolve) and practical action keeps the practice grounded.
07
When to consult a crystal therapy or Vastu expert
Consult an expert when you want crystals to work with the actual zones of your home or office, especially if the North zone has a toilet, kitchen or heavy storage. A Vastu reading shows where the North truly falls, which is often different from what the building layout suggests.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar assesses your space, selects suitable crystals such as Citrine and Pyrite, cleanses and activates them, and places them in Vastu-aligned positions, with follow-up where needed. Consultations are on-site across Mumbai from the Andheri East office, or by distance using floor plans and photographs.
