Master Bedroom Vastu: Bed Direction, Mirrors and Wardrobes

01

Which direction is ideal for the master bedroom?

The South-West is the ideal direction for the master bedroom, because this zone of नैऋत्य (Nairutya) and the earth element is associated with stability, grounding and authority. The head of the household sleeping here is believed to benefit from its steady quality.

The South and West are also good alternatives. The North-East is not recommended for the master bedroom, as it is ideally kept light for prayer and clarity. If your flat's master bedroom is elsewhere, do not worry; the placement tips in this guide and simple remedies can still create a restful space.

02

Which direction should the bed face in the master bedroom?

Place the bed so that its headboard rests against the South or West wall, which lets you sleep with your head towards the South or West. Sleeping with the head towards the South is considered ideal for deep, settled rest.

  • Head towards South

Ideal; associated with deep sleep and stability.

  • Head towards East

Good; associated with growth and freshness.

  • Head towards West

    Acceptable for adults.

  • Head towards North

    Traditionally avoided in Vastu.

03

What are the key bed placement rules?

Beyond direction, a few placement rules help the bed feel supported and calm.

  • Solid headboard against a wall

Avoid a headboard against a window or floating in the room.

  • No beam above

A beam over the bed is linked with a sense of pressure; a false ceiling or fabric canopy softens it.

  • Not in line with the door

The bed should not be directly in line with the bedroom door.

  • Clear space underneath

Avoid storing old items, shoes or clutter under the bed.

  • Not against a toilet wall

If the headboard shares a wall with a toilet, consider shifting the bed or adding a padded headboard.

  • Place the bed in the South-West of the room

Within the room itself, the bed ideally sits towards the South-West portion.

04

Where should mirrors be placed in the master bedroom?

Mirrors in the master bedroom should not reflect the bed. A mirror facing the bed is traditionally believed to disturb rest and amplify restlessness between partners.

If a mirror must be in the bedroom, place it on the North or East wall where it does not face the bed, or inside the wardrobe door. Cover a dressing-table or wardrobe mirror with a curtain at night if it cannot be moved. Remember that a large dark TV or glossy glass shutters can act like mirrors too.

05

Where should wardrobes and storage be placed?

Place heavy wardrobes and storage along the South or West walls of the master bedroom, ideally in the South-West corner. Heavy furniture in these directions supports the stable, grounded quality of the room.

Keep the North and East walls lighter, with low furniture or open space. Keep wardrobes organised and avoid storing broken items, old papers or unwanted gifts inside. A locker within the wardrobe should open towards the North. Lofts above the bed are ideally avoided or kept very light.

06

What about TVs, laptops and phones in the bedroom?

Electronics are ideally kept out of the master bedroom, or at least away from the bed, because screens and devices are linked with disturbed rest. In compact flats this is not always possible, so keep their presence minimal.

If you keep a TV, place it in the South-East of the room and switch it off completely at night. Charge phones away from the bedside, keep work laptops out of the bed and cover screens when not in use. A simple wind-down routine without screens helps many people rest better.

07

Which colours and décor suit the master bedroom?

Soft, earthy and warm colours suit the master bedroom, such as beige, cream, light brown, soft green, light pink and peach. Avoid harsh bright red, loud orange and very dark walls.

Choose calm artwork, preferably paired images, and avoid pictures of water bodies, war, sadness or deities in the bedroom; deities belong in the pooja corner. Keep lighting soft and warm, add a small plant only if you care for it, and a pair of Rose Quartz crystals on the bedside table is a traditional symbol of harmony for couples.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert for your master bedroom

Consider a consultation when the master bedroom is in the North-East or another challenging zone, when the layout makes a South or West headboard impossible, or when you are planning new bedroom interiors.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya offers room-by-room Vastu guidance on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, and through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs, with non-structural remedies that also suit rented homes.
