Colour Therapy at Home: Choosing Colours by Direction
Colour therapy at home matches colours to each direction's element and each room's purpose. A practical guide to Vastu colours by direction and room, and how to use them without repainting.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
What is colour therapy at home?
Colour therapy at home is the use of colour to bring balance and a chosen mood to each room, guided by the direction of the room and the element linked with it in Vastu. In Hindi, colour is रंग (rang), and colour has long been part of Indian festivals, rituals and homes.
In Vastu, every direction is associated with one of the पंचतत्व (Pancha Tattva, the five elements), and each element with a family of colours. When a room's colours support its zone, the space is believed to feel harmonious; when they clash, the room can feel restless or heavy.
02
How do colours relate to the five elements?
Each of the five elements is associated with a group of colours, and these associations form the basis of colour therapy in Vastu.
Water
Blues and light, clear shades; linked with flow and calm.
Fire
Orange, red, pink and peach; linked with warmth and energy.
Air
White, grey and soft silver; linked with movement and lightness.
Earth
Yellow, beige, sand and brown; linked with stability.
Space
White, cream and very pale shades; linked with openness.
03
Which colours suit each direction as per Vastu?
The following are general Vastu colour associations by direction. A consultant may refine them after studying a specific home.
North
Greens and light blues, associated with opportunity and growth.
North-East
White, cream and pale yellow, keeping the ईशान्य (Ishanya) zone light and clear.
East
Light green, white and soft sky tones, for freshness and vitality.
South-East
Orange, peach, pink and warm light reds in moderation, for the fire element.
South
Coral, pink and warm earthy tones.
South-West
Beige, sand, light brown and earthy yellows, for stability.
West and North-West
White, off-white, grey and soft silver shades.
Centre
Very light, neutral shades that keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan) open.
04
What colours should you use in each room?
Choose room colours by considering both the room's direction and what the room is used for, since a bedroom and a study in the same zone need different moods.
Master bedroom
Soft earthy tones, beige, light pink or peach for rest and warmth; very bright reds are usually avoided.
Children's room
Light green, soft blue or pale yellow, for a calm and focused atmosphere.
Kitchen
Warm shades such as orange, peach or light red, in keeping with the fire element.
Living room
Cream, light yellow, soft green or warm neutrals that feel welcoming.
Pooja room
White, cream or pale yellow for a peaceful, sacred feel.
Study or home office
Light green, pale yellow or sky blue to support alertness.
05
Which colours are usually avoided at home?
Very dark, heavy colours across large areas are usually avoided, especially in the North-East, living rooms and bedrooms, because they can make a space feel closed in. Black, dark grey and deep red are better as small accents than as main wall colours.
Avoid clashing too many strong colours in a small room. In Mumbai flats with limited daylight, lighter walls also help rooms feel more spacious. No colour is wrong in itself; the question is always where, how much and for what purpose.
06
How can you use colour therapy without repainting?
You can use colour therapy without repainting by bringing colour in through fabrics, décor and light, which is ideal for rented flats or when you want to test a colour first.
Curtains and cushions
Swap covers to match the zone of each room.
Bedsheets
Soft earthy or pink tones in the bedroom are easy to change seasonally.
Rugs and runners
A beige or sand rug grounds a South-West room.
Artwork and frames
Choose paintings whose main colours suit the wall's direction.
Flowers and plants
Fresh flowers add natural colour, especially in the North-East and East.
Coloured light
Warm lamps in the South-East and cool daylight bulbs in study areas shift the mood gently.
07
How does colour therapy work with other Vastu remedies?
Colour therapy often works alongside other non-structural remedies such as crystals, metal strips, pyramids, mirrors, light and Reiki. For example, a zone that needs grounding may receive earthy colours along with heavy furniture, while a zone that needs freshness may receive light colours and more daylight.
Colour therapy supports how a space feels, and like other healing therapies it complements and does not replace medical or psychological care.
08
When to consult a colour therapy and Vastu expert
A consultation helps before repainting a home, when planning new interiors, or when a room simply does not feel right despite good furniture. It is easier to plan colours once than to repaint several times.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya prepares colour plans matched to direction, element and room use, on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office or through distant consultations using floor plans and photographs.
