Yes or No Tarot: What It Can Honestly Answer

01

What is yes or no tarot?

Yes or no tarot is a one-card pull where you ask a closed question and read the card as a yes, a no or a maybe. It is the quickest form of tarot and the one most people try first.

There are two usual methods. In the first, an upright card means yes and a reversed card means no. In the second, each of the 78 cards is given a fixed answer from a list, so The Sun is a yes and the Five of Swords is a no.

03

Why is yes or no a weak use of tarot?

It is a weak use because tarot cards are pictures with many shades of meaning, and a yes or no pull throws almost all of that away.

  • 01

    The lists do not agree

Different books and apps give the same card different answers. There is no shared rule.

  • 02

A coin does the same job

If all you want is one of two answers, the picture on the card adds nothing.

  • 03

    It invites repeat pulls

People draw again and again until the answer they hoped for appears. That is not reflection.

  • 04

    It hands over your decision

A reading should leave you clearer about your own choice, not waiting for a card to make it.

  • 05

It assumes the future is fixed

Tarot does not foresee events. It reflects where you stand today, and that can change.

04

How do you rephrase a yes or no question?

Change the question so that it begins with 'what' or 'how' and keeps you at the centre of it. The cards then have something to describe.

A useful test is this: could the answer help you act differently tomorrow? If so, it is a good tarot question.

  • 01

    'Will I get the job?'

Becomes 'What can I do to present myself well for this role?'

  • 02

    'Should I move to Pune?'

Becomes 'What am I hoping this move will give me, and what would I miss?'

  • 03

    'Does he love me?'

Becomes 'What do I need from this relationship, and am I receiving it?'

  • 04

    'Will my business succeed?'

Becomes 'What needs my attention in the business over the next three months?'

05

Is there an honest way to do a yes or no pull?

Yes, if you use the card as a prompt for your own feelings rather than as a verdict. Used that way, a quick pull can be genuinely helpful.

Draw one card and decide in advance that upright is yes and reversed is no. Then notice your first reaction. Relief tells you that you wanted that answer. Disappointment tells you that you wanted the other one. Your reaction is the real information, and the card only brought it out.

Keep two simple rules. Pull once, and do not pull again on the same question that day. Then look at the picture and ask what it shows about your situation.

06

Which questions should never be put to tarot?

Tarot must not be used for questions that need a qualified professional, or that concern another person's private life. A responsible reader will decline them politely.

  • 01

    Medical

Symptoms, test results, surgery or medicines. Please see a doctor.

  • 02

    Legal

Court cases, property disputes, contracts or custody. Please see a lawyer.

  • 03

    Pregnancy

Whether you are pregnant, will conceive, or the health of a baby. These are medical questions.

  • 04

    Death

When or whether someone will die. No card can know this, and asking only feeds fear.

  • 05

    Another person's private thoughts

Cards cannot read someone else's mind, and it is not fair to that person. Ask about your own side instead.

07

When to book a tarot reading

Book a reading when a question keeps going round in your head and you want to look at it properly, with more than one card and someone to talk it through with.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers tarot reading at VastuKimaya in Andheri East, Mumbai, as a practice of reflection and clarity, never prediction. You can bring a yes or no question to a session and reshape it together. See the other services or book an appointment when you are ready.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is yes or no tarot accurate?

Yes or no tarot cannot be called accurate, because the cards do not foresee events. A one-card pull gives you one of two answers, much as a coin would. What it can honestly offer is a prompt: your own reaction to the card often shows what you were hoping for.

Which tarot cards mean yes and which mean no?

There is no agreed list. Many guides treat bright cards such as The Sun, The Star and the Aces as yes, and difficult cards such as the Five of Swords or the Ten of Swords as no. Other guides disagree. That lack of agreement is one reason yes or no pulls are unreliable.

Can I ask the same question again if I do not like the answer?

It is better not to. Pulling again until a welcome card appears only tells you what you already wanted. If the first answer upset you, that feeling is useful. Ask a new, open question instead, such as 'What worries me about this outcome?'

Can tarot tell me if I am pregnant?

No. Tarot cannot tell you whether you are pregnant, whether you will conceive, or anything about a baby's health. These are medical questions. A home test and a visit to your doctor will give you a real answer, and a responsible reader will tell you the same.

Can tarot tell me what someone else is thinking?

No. Cards cannot read another person's private thoughts or feelings, and taking a card as proof of what someone thinks can damage a relationship. Tarot can help you look at your own side: what you feel, what you need, and what you might say to that person directly.

How should I phrase a question for a tarot reading?

Start with 'what' or 'how' and keep yourself at the centre. Instead of 'Will this work out?', ask 'What can I do to give this a fair chance?' Open questions give the cards something to describe and leave you with a step you can take.
