Vastu for Toddlers' Nurseries and Play Areas

The West or North-West of the home suits a nursery, and the East is also favourable. The West is associated with steadiness and restful sleep, the North-West with movement and cheerfulness, and the East with the fresh energy of the morning sun.

The South-West is generally kept for the parents or head of the family. In a compact Mumbai flat the baby often sleeps in the parents' room for the first years, which is perfectly fine; simply create a gentle baby corner within that room using the tips below.

Place the cot so the baby's head points towards the East or South, with at least one side against a solid wall. This follows the same sleeping directions Vastu suggests for the rest of the family.

Soft, light and cheerful colours suit a nursery, such as cream, pale yellow, light green, sky blue or soft peach. Gentle shades feel restful for sleep and still bright enough for play.

Avoid very dark or loud colours over whole walls. If you love bold colour, use it in small doses through a rug, a cushion or artwork on the East or North wall. Wall stickers of animals, trees or the sun are easy to change as the child grows.

A play area suits the North, East or North-West, where there is light, open floor and room to move. These zones are associated with growth, freshness and activity, which matches how toddlers explore.

Store toys and baby items in the West or North-West of the room, in low, closed baskets or shelves. This keeps the North-East light and makes tidying a simple daily routine.

Rotate toys rather than displaying everything at once. Fewer toys at a time keep the space calm and often hold a toddler's attention for longer. Give away or repair broken toys, as broken objects are associated with stagnant energy in Vastu.

Plan the nursery so it can become a children's room later, with furniture that adapts rather than being replaced every year. Toddlers turn into school-goers quickly, and a little planning now avoids a crowded room later.

Leave space on the East or North side of the room where a small study table can go in future, so the child can face East or North while learning. Choose a cot that converts to a bed, and low shelves that can later hold books. Keep heavier wardrobes on the South or West walls from the start, which keeps the North and East lighter and more open.

Crystals and small décor items should be kept completely out of a toddler's reach, because small pieces can be a choking hazard. Safety matters far more than any Vastu placement.

If you would like a gentle crystal in the room, choose a large, smooth rose quartz or amethyst and place it high on a secure shelf. Avoid pyramids with sharp points, glass objects and hanging items within reach. Salt bowls used for space cleansing should also be kept up high or in another room.
