Hostel and PG Room Vastu for Students Away From Home
You can't move walls in a hostel or PG room, but you can choose where you sit, sleep and store things. Simple, portable hostel room Vastu tips for students living away from home.

01
Does Vastu apply to a hostel or PG room?
Yes, Vastu applies to a hostel or PG room, but in a practical, portable way. You cannot shift the door, toilet or window, so hostel room Vastu focuses on the choices you do control: where you sit, which way you sleep, how you store things and how the room is lit.
For many students, this is the first time they are arranging a space of their own. A few thoughtful choices can help the room feel calmer, more focused and more like home — which matters when you are adjusting to a new city, a new course and new people.
02
Which direction should you face while studying in a hostel room?
Face East or North while studying. The East is linked with Indra and Surya, the rising sun and fresh beginnings, while the North is linked with Kubera and is associated with new opportunities. Both directions are traditionally recommended for concentration and learning.
If the hostel desk is fixed against a wall that makes you face South or West, check whether you can turn the chair and use the bed or a small folding table instead. If nothing can move, don't worry — keep the desk tidy, add a good lamp and place a small Clear Quartz or a green plant on the East or North side of the desk.
01
Keep a wall behind you
Sit with a solid wall behind your back rather than the door. It feels more secure and supports steady focus.
02
Don't sit directly under a beam
If a beam runs over the desk, shift the chair slightly to one side.
03
Use a desk lamp
Good light on your books matters more than any remedy, especially for late-night study.
03
Which way should your bed face in a PG room?
Sleep with your head towards the South or East. The South is associated with deep, restful sleep and the East with learning and growth, which suits students well. Sleeping with the head towards the North is traditionally avoided.
In a shared room, you may not get first choice of bed. If your bed points the wrong way, you can often simply sleep with your pillow at the other end. Try to keep the headboard against a wall rather than a window, and avoid a mirror or wardrobe glass that reflects you while you sleep.
05
What simple remedies can students carry to a hostel?
Students can carry small, portable remedies that need no nails, paint or permission from the warden. These make the room feel personal and settled.
01
A small crystal
Clear Quartz on the study desk for clarity, or Amethyst near the bed for a calmer mind.
02
A family photograph
Place it on the South-West side of your space. The South-West is associated with stability and belonging.
03
A plant
A small, easy plant such as a money plant in the North or East, kept healthy and watered.
04
A light, fresh colour
Pale green, cream or light blue bedsheets and cushion covers keep the space calm.
05
A study ritual
Some students like to sit quietly for a minute before studying, or recite a short prayer to Goddess Saraswati, सरस्वती (Saraswati, the goddess of learning).
07
What if you feel homesick or stressed in the hostel?
Feeling homesick or stressed when you first move away is common, and it helps to talk about it. Stay in touch with family, make one or two small routines of your own, and spend time outdoors in daylight.
A calm room supports well-being, but Vastu and crystals complement and do not replace real support. Reach out to your college counsellor, a trusted teacher or a doctor if low mood continues. If you are struggling, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.

When to consult a Vastu expert
Consider consulting a Vastu expert when you are choosing between PG options or flats to rent, or when parents want to set up a student's room thoughtfully from the start.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers distant consultations using a simple floor plan or photographs, which suits students studying in other cities. For accommodation in Mumbai, on-site consultations are available from the Andheri East office. Suggestions are always portable and non-structural, so they work in rented and shared spaces.
Questions
Frequently asked
What if my hostel study table faces South?
Turn your chair or use a different surface if you can; if not, keep the desk tidy and well lit and place a Clear Quartz or plant on its North or East side. Good light and a clutter-free desk matter most.
Can I keep crystals in a shared hostel room?
Yes, small crystals such as Clear Quartz or Amethyst are easy to keep on a desk or bedside shelf. Cleanse them occasionally in sunlight or with sound, and keep them in your own space.
Where should I keep my suitcase in a PG room?
Keep suitcases in the South-West part of your space or neatly under the bed. Heavy storage in the South-West is associated with stability, while the North and East are kept lighter.
Is it bad to sleep with my head towards the North in a hostel?
Vastu traditionally avoids it, so turn your pillow to the South or East end of the bed if possible. If the bed cannot be adjusted, keep the room calm and clutter-free and don't worry about it.
Which colour bedsheet is good for a student's hostel room?
Light, calm colours such as pale green, light blue or cream suit a student's room. They keep a small space feeling open and restful.
