Vastu for Studio Apartments and 1RK Homes
When one room is your bedroom, living room and workspace, every corner counts. Practical studio apartment Vastu tips for 1RK homes in Mumbai — with zones, not walls.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Does Vastu apply to studio apartments and 1RK homes?
Yes, Vastu applies fully to studio apartments and 1RK homes; the only difference is that the directions are applied to a single room rather than to separate rooms. Every space, however small, has a North-East, a South-West and a centre.
For students, young professionals and couples starting out in Mumbai, a 1RK or studio is often the first independent home. Vastu can make such a space feel less cramped and more supportive by giving each activity a logical place. Because the remedies VastuKimaya uses are non-structural, they suit rented studios too.
02
How do you map directions in a single-room home?
Map directions by standing near the centre of the room with a compass and marking the North, then dividing the room into a simple 3 × 3 grid. Each of the eight outer squares represents a direction, and the middle square is the centre.
Use a phone compass away from the fridge, induction cooktop and metal grilles, which can affect the reading. Take the reading two or three times from slightly different spots. Sketch a rough plan on paper and note where the door, windows, kitchen platform and toilet fall. This simple map guides every decision below.
03
Where should the bed go in a studio apartment?
The bed is best placed in the South-West zone of the studio, with your head towards the South or East while sleeping. The South-West is the zone of stability and rest, associated with the earth element.
01
Solid wall behind the headboard
Avoid placing the head of the bed under a window or against the toilet wall.
02
Not in line with the door
Avoid positioning the bed so your feet point straight at the main door.
03
Sofa-cum-bed
If you use a sofa-cum-bed, place it on the South or West wall so it serves both purposes from the right zone.
04
Visual separation
A bookshelf, curtain or low screen between the sleeping area and the rest of the room helps the mind switch off.
04
Where should the kitchen and toilet be?
The cooking area is ideally in the South-East of the flat, with the North-West as an acceptable alternative, and you should cook facing East where possible. In most 1RK homes the kitchen platform is fixed, so focus on how you use it.
If the platform is in another zone, place the stove at the South-East end of the counter, keep the sink and water purifier away from the stove, and use warm colours such as orange, peach or light red in small accents. For the toilet, keep the door closed, the lid down and the space dry and fresh. A bowl of rock salt, changed weekly, is a simple salt therapy remedy for a toilet in a sensitive zone such as the North-East.
05
Where should you work or study in a studio?
Set up your desk so that you face East or North while working. The East supports learning and fresh thinking; the North supports career and opportunities.
In a single room, the North or East wall usually works well for a compact desk. Avoid sitting with your back to the main door, and avoid working from the bed — it blurs the line between rest and work, which is especially important in a small home. When work is over, close the laptop and cover the desk with a cloth or fold it away.
06
How can you use the North-East and the centre in a small space?
Use the North-East for something light and meaningful — a small mandir, a plant, a water bowl or a meditation cushion — and keep the centre of the room as open as possible. These two zones affect how spacious and calm a studio feels.
01
A wall-mounted mandir
In ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East), a small wall shelf for a deity or lamp takes no floor space.
02
No heavy storage in the North-East
Keep suitcases, trunks and heavy almirahs on the South or West walls instead.
03
Open centre
The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) should be clear — use foldable tables and move them aside after use.
04
Light and air
Keep North and East windows unblocked and open them in the morning.
07
How do you divide zones without building walls?
Divide zones with furniture, rugs, curtains, colour and lighting rather than construction. This keeps the studio flexible and suits rented homes.
01
Rugs
One rug for the sleeping zone and another for the sitting or working zone creates two distinct areas.
02
Open shelving
A low open shelf divides space while letting light pass through.
03
Colour
Earthy tones in the South-West sleeping area, light yellows or greens in the East work area, and white or cream in the North-East.
04
Layered lighting
Warm lamps near the bed and brighter task light at the desk help each zone feel different.
05
Declutter weekly
In one room, clutter is visible everywhere. A short weekly clear-out keeps energy moving.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert if you are choosing between two studio flats, if your studio has an entrance or toilet in a sensitive zone, or if the space simply does not feel settled. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar can map your studio accurately and suggest where each activity should sit.
She offers consultations at the Andheri East office, on-site visits across Mumbai, and distant consultations using a floor plan and photographs — practical for tenants and busy professionals.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is a 1RK flat good as per Vastu?
A 1RK flat can be perfectly good as per Vastu when the entrance, kitchen and toilet are reasonably placed and the room is organised by zones. Most issues have simple remedies.
Which direction should I sleep in a studio apartment?
Sleep in the South-West part of the studio with your head towards the South or East. Avoid sleeping with your head towards the North.
Can I keep a mandir in a studio apartment?
Yes, a small wall-mounted mandir in the North-East of the studio is ideal. Keep it above eye level and away from the toilet wall and the bed.
What if the kitchen and bed are in the same area?
Separate them visually with a curtain, shelf or screen, and avoid sleeping with your head towards the stove. Keep the cooking area clean before bed.
Do Vastu remedies work in a rented studio?
Yes, VastuKimaya's remedies are non-structural and portable. Crystals, pyramids, colour accents and furniture placement can move with you to your next home.
