Vastu for Office Desk and Cabin: Seating, Direction and Placement

01

Which direction should you face while working as per Vastu?

You should face East or North while working. The East is associated with the rising sun, fresh ideas and growth, while the North is associated with opportunities, career and money flow. Facing either direction is believed to support focus and clear decision-making.

Sales, marketing and client-facing roles often benefit from facing North, while research, creative and learning-focused work suits facing East. Avoid facing South while working where you can, and avoid sitting with your back to the main door of the room.

02

Where should the owner's cabin be in an office?

The owner's or director's cabin is traditionally best placed in the South-West of the office. This zone is associated with stability, authority and control, which suits the person responsible for key decisions.

  • Seating

Place the desk so the owner faces North or East, with a solid wall — not a window or door — behind the chair.

  • Visitors' chairs

Visitors should sit across the desk, facing South or West.

  • Cabin shape

A square or rectangular cabin is preferred. Avoid irregular or cut corners.

  • No beam overhead

Do not place the chair directly under a beam, which is believed to create pressure and stress.

03

Where should managers and employees sit?

  • Senior managers

The South, West or South-West portions of the office, facing North or East.

  • Sales and marketing teams

The North-West, which is associated with movement and communication.

  • Accounts and finance

The South-East or North, with cash and lockers opening towards the North or East.

  • General workstations

The North, East or West, with staff facing North or East where possible.

  • Conference room

The North-West or West of the office.

04

What should you keep on your office desk as per Vastu?

Keep your desk clean, organised and uncluttered, because piles of old files and broken stationery are believed to block fresh opportunities. A few thoughtfully placed items are enough.

  • Electronics

Computers, printers and phones in the South-East part of the desk, which is associated with the fire element.

  • Files and pending work

Stacked on the South or West side of the desk, and cleared regularly.

  • Water or a small plant

A glass of water or a small healthy plant in the North-East part of the desk.

  • Crystals

Pyrite for business confidence and money flow, or Green Aventurine for focus and opportunity. Clear Quartz can support clarity.

  • Stationery

Pens and notepads in the North or East part of the desk, within easy reach.

05

What should you avoid at your desk?

Avoid anything that leaves you feeling exposed, cramped or distracted while you work. Most of these are easy to correct with a small change in seating or a quick clear-out, and they matter as much in a shared open-plan office as in a private cabin.

  • Sitting under a beam or with a window or open passage directly behind you
  • Broken equipment, dead plants, old newspapers and unused files
  • Sharp corners of furniture pointing towards your seat
  • Sitting with your back to the door, where people approach unseen
  • Dark, heavy colours on the desk surface or wall in front of you

06

Which colours and lighting suit an office cabin?

Light, calm colours suit most cabins — white, cream, light yellow, light green or soft blue. Earthy tones such as beige and light brown suit the South-West cabin, where stability matters. Avoid very dark or harsh colours on the wall you face.

Good light is just as important. Let in natural light from the North and East where possible, avoid glare on screens and keep the cabin well lit rather than relying on a single desk lamp.

In open-plan offices where you cannot choose the wall colour, bring in the right tones through a desk mat, a pin board, files or a small artwork placed on your desk or partition.

07

How do you apply Vastu to a work-from-home desk?

For a work-from-home desk, choose a corner where you can face East or North, with a wall behind you. In a Mumbai flat, this might be a corner of the living room, a study or the West or South-West of a bedroom — keep the work area distinct from the bed.

Avoid working on the bed, clear the desk at the end of each day, and keep laptops and chargers in the South-East part of the desk. If video calls mean you must face another way, position the camera so your seated direction still faces East or North where possible. See our Study Room Vastu guide for more on focus.

When to consult an expert

Consult an expert when setting up a new office, moving into a rented commercial space, or when a business faces repeated obstacles despite sound planning. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya, Andheri East, Mumbai, assesses offices and cabins on-site across Mumbai — including Andheri, Powai, Goregaon, Worli and South Mumbai — and at a distance using floor plans and photos. Her remedies are non-structural, so they suit rented offices. See our Office Vastu and Commercial Vastu pages.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction should I face in the office as per Vastu?

Face East or North while working. The owner's or director's desk is traditionally placed in the South-West of the office so they face North or East, with a solid wall behind the chair.

Can I sit with my back to the window in the office?

It is better to have a solid wall behind your chair for support. If a window is unavoidable, a high-backed chair or keeping the blind partly closed can help.

Which crystal is good for the office desk?

Pyrite is commonly used for business confidence and money flow, and Green Aventurine for focus and opportunity. Clear Quartz can support clarity.

Where should the cash locker be in an office?

Keep cash and important documents in a clean, organised place with the locker opening towards the North or East, and keep the North zone free of clutter.

Can Vastu be applied to a rented office or co-working space?

Yes. Seating direction, desk arrangement, colours and portable remedies such as crystals and pyramids need no structural changes.
