Vastu for Living Room: Seating, Colours and TV Placement

01

Which direction is ideal for the living room as per Vastu?

The North, East or North-East is the most supportive direction for a living room, because these zones are linked with light, fresh prana (प्राण, life energy) and new opportunities. The North-West also works well for families who entertain guests often, since it is the zone of Vayu, the air element, and of movement.

In most Mumbai flats the hall is already fixed by the builder, so do not worry if yours sits elsewhere. Vastu is about how you use a room as much as where it is. The seating, colours, lighting and what you keep in each corner can bring a living room into balance without breaking a single wall.

Try to avoid using the South-West corner of the home as a busy, noisy gathering space, and do not let the South-East corner of the hall become a dumping ground. If your hall does fall in these zones, the tips below still apply.

02

Where should the sofa be placed in the living room?

Place the main sofa and other heavy seating along the South or West walls, so that the people sitting on them face North or East. Heavy furniture in the South and West gives the room a grounded, stable feel, while the North and East stay lighter and more open.

  • Head of the family

Seat the elder or host so that they face East or North when talking with guests.

  • Avoid beams

Do not place the sofa directly under an exposed beam; if you cannot move it, a false ceiling or a soft fabric canopy helps.

  • Keep a solid wall behind

A sofa backed by a wall feels more supported than one floating with its back to a door or passage.

  • Leave the centre open

The ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) should stay free of heavy tables and clutter; a light rug is fine.

  • Guest seating

Lighter chairs or ottomans can sit in the North-West, which suits the coming and going of visitors.

03

Which is the right wall for the TV as per Vastu?

The South-East wall is a good place for the television, because electronic equipment belongs to the fire element and the South-East is the zone of Agni. When the TV is on this wall, viewers usually face towards the North-West, which is comfortable for relaxed family time.

If the South-East wall is not practical, the South or East walls are workable alternatives. Try not to mount the TV in the North-East corner, which is ideally kept light, calm and uncluttered. Keep wires neatly concealed, switch the set off completely at night, and avoid having the screen reflect the main entrance.

In small halls where the TV must face the dining table or the door, a simple cabinet with shutters, or a fabric cover when it is not in use, keeps the screen from dominating the room.

04

What colours are good for a living room in Vastu?

Light, warm and welcoming colours suit the living room: white, cream, off-white, pale yellow, soft green and gentle blue. These shades reflect light, make compact rooms feel larger and support easy conversation.

  • Cream and off-white

Neutral, bright and easy to live with; an ideal base in most flats.

  • Light yellow

Associated with warmth and prosperity; lovely on an East or North-East facing wall.

  • Soft green

Linked with growth and harmony; suits a North wall or cushions and curtains.

  • Gentle blue

Associated with peace and clear communication; use it as an accent rather than all over.

05

What décor and artwork should you keep in the living room?

Choose artwork that shows nature, sunrise, flowing water, green landscapes or happy family moments, and avoid images of war, crying faces, wild animals attacking or lonely figures. What we look at every day quietly shapes the mood of the home.

Fresh flowers or a healthy plant in the North-East corner bring life to the room. A small indoor fountain or aquarium can sit in the North or North-East if you can keep the water clean. Mirrors belong on the North or East walls, where they expand light, and should not face the main door. Remove dried flowers, broken showpieces and stopped clocks, which are traditionally seen as holding stagnant energy.

06

How can you apply living room Vastu in a small Mumbai flat?

In a compact 1BHK or 2BHK, focus on light, clutter and seating direction first, because these three changes make the biggest difference to how the room feels. You do not need expensive renovation.

  • Declutter the entrance side

Shoe racks, bags and parcels near the door block the first flow of energy into the home; keep them in a closed cabinet.

  • Brighten the North-East

Open the curtains in the morning and keep a lamp or diya in this corner in the evening.

  • Use a sofa-cum-bed wisely

Fold it back each morning so the room stays open during the day.

  • Choose a single accent wall

If repainting is not possible, bring in colour through cushions, rugs and curtains.

  • Clear the balcony

A balcony opening off the hall should not become storage; a few plants make it a fresh extension of the room.

07

When to consult a Vastu expert for your living room

Consider a consultation when the living room feels heavy despite your efforts, when arguments seem to start in this space, or when you are planning an interior makeover and want to get it right from the start. The hall is also closely connected to the main entrance, which needs a proper compass reading by pada (sub-zone) that is hard to judge by eye.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya visits homes across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, and also offers distant consultations using your floor plan and photographs. Her remedies are non-structural, such as colour, crystals, pyramids and Reiki, so they suit rented flats as well as owned homes.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction should we face while sitting in the living room?

Facing East or North while seated is considered favourable in Vastu. Place the main sofa along the South or West wall so that the family and the host naturally face these directions during conversations.

Can the TV be placed on the North wall of the living room?

It is better to avoid the North and North-East walls for the TV, as these zones are kept light and calm. The South-East wall is preferred, with the South or East walls as workable alternatives.

Is a fish aquarium good in the living room as per Vastu?

Yes, an aquarium in the North or North-East of the living room is considered auspicious, provided the water is kept clean and the fish are well cared for. A neglected tank is better removed.

Where should the mirror be placed in the living room?

Place mirrors on the North or East wall of the living room, where they reflect light and open up the space. Avoid a mirror directly facing the main door.

Can I follow living room Vastu in a rented flat?

Yes. Furniture placement, colours through fabrics, plants, lighting and decluttering are all non-structural changes that you can make in a rented flat and take with you when you move.
