Vastu for Home Office and Work-from-Home Desks
Working from a bedroom corner or dining table? Practical work from home Vastu tips to choose the right zone, face the right direction and keep work from spilling into rest.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Why does Vastu matter when you work from home?
Vastu matters when you work from home because your home now has to support both rest and productivity, two very different kinds of energy. Without clear zones, work tends to spread into bedrooms, dining tables and sofas, and rest suffers.
In Mumbai flats, a separate study is a luxury. Most people work from a bedroom corner, a balcony converted into a nook or the dining table. Vastu does not require a dedicated room; it asks you to choose the most supportive zone available, face a helpful direction, and mark a clear boundary between work time and home time.
02
Which part of the home suits a home office?
The North, East and West parts of the home are generally the most suitable for a home office. Each supports a slightly different kind of work.
01
North
Linked with Kubera, career and opportunity; suits sales, business development, finance and client-facing roles.
02
East
Linked with Indra, Surya and fresh starts; suits learning, research, creative and strategic work.
03
West
Linked with Varuna and gains; suits steady, results-driven work and long focus sessions.
04
South-West
Suitable for business owners and senior decision-makers who need stability, if a room is available.
05
Avoid the centre
Keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) open rather than turning it into a permanent workstation.
03
Which direction should you face while working from home?
Face East or North while working from home. The East is associated with clarity and new ideas, and the North with opportunities and growth.
Place the desk so a solid wall is behind your chair, which supports a sense of security and steady focus. Avoid sitting with your back to the room's door, and avoid sitting directly under a beam. If you must face another direction because of the room's layout, place a small Clear Quartz on the North-East side of the desk and keep that side uncluttered.
04
Can you work from the bedroom as per Vastu?
You can work from the bedroom if there is no other option, but keep the desk visually separate from the bed and never work from the bed itself. The bedroom is meant for rest, and bringing work into bed blurs that boundary.
01
Use the North or East side of the room
Set the desk on this side, away from the South-West sleeping area.
02
Do not face the bed
Your screen should not be in view from your pillow.
03
A visual divider
A curtain, plant or bookshelf between desk and bed helps.
04
Close up at night
Shut the laptop, cover the desk with a cloth or fold it away before sleep.
05
Calm crystals
Amethyst suits a bedroom desk better than energising stones.
05
How should you arrange the desk itself?
Arrange the desk by treating it as a miniature Vastu map, with electronics, files and the clear working area in their natural zones.
01
South-East — electronics
Laptop charger, router, printer and lamp belong on this fire-element side, linked with Agni.
02
North-East — clarity
Keep ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) of the desk light: a plant, a crystal or a glass of water.
03
South-West — files
Heavier files, reference books and storage.
04
North — opportunity
Your planner, current project or a Green Aventurine crystal.
05
Centre — clear
Keep the middle of the desk free for active work.
06
Tangle-free cables
Messy wires are a form of clutter; tie and route them neatly.
06
What lighting and colours support home working?
Natural light from the East or North, combined with warm task lighting, supports home working. Colours that feel fresh without being loud help you stay alert and calm.
Position the desk so daylight falls from the side rather than creating glare on your screen. In the evening, use a warm desk lamp placed on the South-East side. For walls or accents near the workspace, light green supports growth, light yellow brings warmth and optimism, and soft blue supports calm. Keep bright reds and very dark colours to small accents.
07
How can you keep video calls and backgrounds Vastu-friendly?
Keep video calls Vastu-friendly with a clean, calm background, good front lighting and nothing cluttered or negative behind you. What colleagues see also reflects your working energy.
A plain light wall, a bookshelf, a plant or a peaceful landscape painting makes a good backdrop. Avoid an unmade bed, laundry, a toilet door or a mirror behind you. Face a window or a lamp so your face is well lit. If a toilet or kitchen is visible, a simple fabric screen solves the issue.

When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert when you are setting up a long-term home office, when two partners both need a workspace in a small flat, or when working from home feels draining despite good habits. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar can map your home's zones and suggest where each person should work, face and store their equipment.
She offers consultations at the Andheri East office, on-site visits across Mumbai, and distant consultations using your floor plan and photographs. Remember that rest, breaks and healthy boundaries matter just as much as desk placement; if work stress is affecting your health, please speak to a doctor or counsellor.
Questions
Frequently asked
Which direction should my work from home desk face?
Your work from home desk should be placed so you face East or North while working. Keep a solid wall behind your chair.
Is it bad to work from the bed as per Vastu?
Yes, working from the bed is discouraged in Vastu because it mixes rest and work energies. Use a separate desk, even a small foldable one.
Where should a home office be in a 2BHK flat?
In a 2BHK, a home office suits the North, East or West part of the flat, often a corner of the second bedroom or a converted balcony nook.
Can two people work from home in the same room?
Yes, place both desks so each person faces East or North, ideally not facing each other directly. Use headphones and a divider for calls.
Which plant is good for a home office desk?
A money plant, bamboo plant or small snake plant suits a home office desk. Place it on the North or East side and keep it healthy.
