Showroom Vastu: Display and Billing Counter

01

Why does Vastu matter for a showroom?

Vastu matters for a showroom because customers decide within moments whether a space feels inviting, and the layout guides how they move, browse and buy. A well-balanced showroom feels open, confident and easy to explore.

The interior of any shop or showroom should be planned according to the type of business and Vastu principles together. Whether you sell furniture, apparel, jewellery, electronics or cars, the same core ideas apply.

02

How should the showroom entrance be planned?

The entrance should be bright, clean and completely free of obstacles, because it is your first conversation with a customer. North, East and North-East entrances are generally favourable; others can be balanced with non-structural remedies after assessment.

Practical points for the shop front:

  • 01

    Clear threshold

No stacked boxes, dustbins, parked two-wheelers or broken signage at the door.

  • 02

    Name board

Well lit, clean and easy to read from the street.

  • 03

    Window display

Your most attractive products clearly visible from the entrance.

  • 04

    Glass doors

Spotless, with no cracked panels or peeling stickers.

  • 05

    Welcome

A fresh toran or plants beside the door, well maintained.

03

Where should the billing counter be placed?

The billing counter is ideally placed in the South-West of the showroom, with the owner or cashier facing North or East. The cash drawer should open towards the North or East, the directions linked with Kubera and growth.

A solid wall behind the cashier gives stability; avoid a counter with the cashier's back to the entrance or a glass window. Keep the counter clear of clutter — a billing machine, a card reader and a small display are enough. If the South-West is not practical because of the shop's shape, the counter can sit in the South or West with the same facing directions.

04

How should display racks and stock be arranged?

Arrange heavy displays and racks along the South and West walls, and keep the North and East comparatively light and open. This gives the showroom a stable back and an inviting front.

More display guidance:

  • 01

    Finished goods for sale

Keep them in the North-West, the zone of movement, which is associated with goods moving out quickly.

  • 02

    Premium products

Highlight them where customers naturally look first, often facing the entrance.

  • 03

    Heavy inventory

Store in the South-West, South or West, never blocking the North-East.

  • 04

    Aisles

Leave wide, clear paths so customers can move easily without feeling crowded.

  • 05

    Damaged or unsold stock

Remove it from the floor and clear it regularly.

05

Why should the centre of the showroom stay empty?

The centre of the showroom should stay empty because it is the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre), the zone that connects every part of the space. An open centre lets energy — and customers — flow freely.

Avoid placing a heavy display island, pillar-like stands or a storage cabinet in the middle of the floor. A light, low display or an open floor area with good lighting is better.

06

Which lighting, colours and décor suit a showroom?

Bright, even lighting and clean, light colours suit most showrooms, because they make products look good and the space feel welcoming. Replace fused bulbs immediately; dark corners feel neglected.

Choose wall colours that support your products: off-white, cream and light grey are versatile, while subtle brand accents can be added. Keep paintings, posters and every décor item positive and Vastu-compliant — avoid images of conflict, sadness or decay. Healthy plants in the North or East and a clean water feature in the North-East, if well maintained, add freshness. Mirrors can be placed on the North or East walls but should not face the entrance directly.

07

Where should stairs, trial rooms and storerooms be?

Stairs in a showroom can be built in the South-West, South or South-East, keeping the North-East free. Storerooms suit the South-West or West.

Trial rooms in apparel showrooms can go in the West or North-West, kept clean with good ventilation and mirrors in good condition. Toilets should avoid the North-East and the centre. Staff areas and the pantry are better in the South-East or North-West.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert before finalising a showroom lease or interiors, before a refurbishment, or when footfall or sales feel stuck despite good products and service. Early advice on layout avoids costly changes later.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar advises shops and showrooms on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office, and offers distant consultations using floor plans and photographs. Remedies are non-structural and portable — suitable for rented commercial premises — with a written report and follow-up.

Questions

Frequently asked

Where should the cash counter be in a showroom as per Vastu?

The cash counter is ideally placed in the South-West of the showroom, with the cashier facing North or East and the cash drawer opening towards the North or East.

Which direction should the showroom owner face?

The showroom owner should face North or East while seated, ideally in the South-West part of the showroom with a solid wall behind.

Where should heavy stock be kept in a showroom?

Heavy stock and racks should be kept along the South and West walls or in the South-West, while finished products for quick sale can be placed in the North-West.

Can Vastu be applied to a rented showroom?

Yes, non-structural Vastu remedies are well suited to rented showrooms, since they need no permanent changes and can move with the business.

Is a South-facing showroom bad as per Vastu?

No, a South-facing showroom is not automatically bad. The exact entrance position matters, and remedies such as threshold strips, pyramids and good lighting can balance it after assessment.
