Exam Stress: What Actually Helps, and Where Reiki Fits
Board exams loom from February. What genuinely helps a stressed student — sleep, the study corner, the parents' behaviour — and the honest, small place a relaxation practice has among it.

01
Start with the things that matter most
Indian board exams run from roughly February, and the pressure builds from the autumn. Parents start looking for anything that might help around now.
It is worth being honest about the order. Sleep matters most, then the study environment, then how the adults in the house are behaving. A relaxation practice sits well below all three, and anyone selling it as the answer to exam stress has the order wrong.
02
Sleep first
The single most common pattern in a stressed student is a collapsing sleep schedule — studying until two, waking at seven, topping up with caffeine, and losing the ability to retain anything.
Sleep is when what was studied gets consolidated. A student sleeping five hours is not studying more effectively than one sleeping eight; they are studying less effectively for longer, which feels like effort and is not.
- A consistent bedtime matters more than the total, within reason.
- The phone charges across the room, not by the pillow.
- No study in bed. The bed is for sleep, or it stops working as a signal.
- Head towards the south or east, the traditional arrangement, and not under a beam.
- Caffeine stops in the afternoon, not at midnight.
03
Then the study corner
This is where Vastu has something practical to offer, and all of it is free.
Face east or north while studying, with a solid wall behind the chair rather than a window or an open door — a back to the doorway means every movement in the house pulls attention away. A west, north or north-east room suits study. Keep the desk surface clear enough to actually work on, with heavy books and storage to the south or west.
Light matters as much as direction. A single ceiling bulb and a bright screen in a dim room is hard on the eyes and hard on concentration; a desk lamp and something lighting the wall behind the screen fixes both.
04
Then the adults
This is the uncomfortable part, and it is said here deliberately because it is the most effective change available in most homes.
Students describe the household atmosphere as a bigger source of stress than the syllabus — the comparisons with cousins, the daily asking about preparation, the anxiety the parents carry visibly. A house that is tense from six in the evening does not produce calm studying.
Reducing that costs nothing and helps more than anything you can buy. Ask less often. Compare never. Let the student see adults who are not frightened.
05
Where a relaxation practice fits
With all of the above in place, a student who is simply too wound up to settle may find an hour of lying still, undisturbed, with nothing asked of them, genuinely useful. That is what रेकी (Reiki) offers: rest, not instruction.
A few sensible conditions apply to any session with a young person. A parent or guardian must consent and be present or nearby. The young person must want it — a session nobody wanted is not restful. And it should never be framed as something that will improve marks, because it will not, and promising that adds pressure rather than removing it.
Sessions are available in person in Andheri East or at a distance.
06
When it is not stress, and needs a doctor
This matters more than anything else in this article. Exam pressure in India is associated with real harm, and some signs are not ordinary stress.
Please speak to a doctor, and do not substitute any complementary practice, if a young person shows any of the following.
- Has stopped eating properly, or has lost noticeable weight.
- Cannot sleep at all, or is sleeping most of the day.
- Has withdrawn from everyone, or stopped speaking about anything.
- Is panicking, with racing heart or breathlessness, more than occasionally.
- Says anything at all about not wanting to be here, or about self-harm.

Said plainly
Reiki is a relaxation practice. It does not improve examination performance, treat any condition, or replace medical or psychological care. Nothing here should delay a conversation with a doctor or a counsellor.
Free mental health support is available in India through Tele-MANAS on 14416, including for young people and for parents who are worried about a child. If someone is in immediate danger, please contact emergency services.
Questions
Frequently asked
Does Reiki help with exam stress?
It offers rest rather than instruction, which can help a student too wound up to settle. Sleep, the study environment and a calmer household do considerably more, and nothing improves marks.
Which direction should a student face while studying?
East or north, with a solid wall behind the chair rather than a window or an open door. A west, north or north-east room suits study.
Can a child have a Reiki session?
Only with a parent or guardian's consent and with them present or nearby, and only if the young person actually wants it. It should never be presented as something that will improve results.
What is the most effective thing parents can change?
Their own behaviour, usually. Students consistently describe household tension and comparison as a greater source of stress than the syllabus, and reducing it costs nothing.
When should exam stress be seen by a doctor?
If a young person has stopped eating, cannot sleep, has withdrawn completely, is panicking regularly, or says anything about self-harm or not wanting to be here. Tele-MANAS is free on 14416.
