Pigeons Nesting in the Balcony: What Vastu Says and What to Do

01

Is a pigeon nest in the house good or bad as per Vastu?

A pigeon nest in the house is neither a blessing nor a curse as per Vastu; it is an upkeep matter. Classical Vastu texts speak about directions, elements, light and air, and they do not set out a rule about pigeons. The Vastu concern is practical: droppings, feathers and nesting material make a balcony or window ledge dirty and block light in zones that are meant to stay clean and open.

Folk beliefs differ from family to family. Some see any bird choosing their home as a sign of life, others see a nest as untidy. Neither view needs to cause worry. A nest is not a dosha, and a calm, kind response is always the right one.

02

Why do pigeons nest on Mumbai balconies?

Pigeons nest on Mumbai balconies because flats offer exactly what they look for: sheltered ledges, the gap behind an AC outdoor unit, the flat upper edge of window grills, and quiet corners that stay dry in the monsoon. A balcony used mostly for storage is especially inviting, because nobody disturbs it.

Food nearby is the other reason. Grain on a ledge, spilt food or an open dustbin brings pigeons back again and again. Understanding this makes prevention much easier than removal.

03

Should a pigeon nest with eggs be removed?

No, a pigeon nest with eggs or chicks should never be removed or destroyed. Wait until the young birds have flown and the nest is empty, which usually takes some weeks, and then clean and protect the area.

This follows the principle of अहिंसा (ahimsa, non-harm) that runs through Indian tradition, and it is simply the humane thing to do. While you wait, avoid disturbing the nest, keep children and pets away from it, and clean only the surrounding area gently. If a chick falls or a bird seems injured, contact a local animal welfare group or bird rescue for advice rather than handling it yourself.

04

Does the direction of the nest matter in Vastu?

The direction matters mainly because some zones are meant to stay especially clean and open. A nest or droppings on a North, East or North-East window or balcony blocks the morning light and fresh air that Vastu welcomes from these sides. The ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is the zone kept lightest and cleanest of all.

A nest in the South or West is less disruptive to light, but cleanliness matters in every direction. Once the nest is empty, give priority to clearing and protecting the North and East openings, so प्राण (prana, life energy) and daylight can flow in freely again.

05

How can pigeons be kept out of the balcony humanely?

Pigeons can be kept out humanely by removing what attracts them and closing off nesting spots, but only after any nest is empty. The goal is for them to nest elsewhere, never to harm them.

  • 01

Netting after the nest is empty

Have a sturdy, fine bird net fitted across the balcony or window by an installer. Check carefully that no bird is trapped inside before it is closed, and check your society's rules on netting on the building face.

  • 02

    Close the AC gap

A mesh guard around the AC outdoor unit and its bracket removes one of the most popular nesting spots.

  • 03

    Cover ledges

A sloped cover on a flat ledge or over a window grill stops birds settling there. If you use spikes, choose blunt-tipped ones fitted by an installer.

  • 04

    No food on the balcony

Keep grain, leftovers and open dustbins off the balcony and ledges. If your family likes to feed birds, do it away from your own windows.

  • 05

    Use the space

A balcony with plants, seating and daily activity is far less attractive to nesting birds than an unused store.

  • 06

    Avoid harmful methods

Never use sticky gels, poison, traps or anything that can injure or trap a bird.

06

Are pigeon droppings a health concern at home?

Pigeon droppings are a hygiene concern, so it is sensible to clean them regularly and carefully. Dried droppings and loose feathers turn into dust that is better not breathed in or carried indoors.

When cleaning, wear gloves and a mask, dampen the droppings with water before scraping so they do not raise dust, put the waste in a sealed bag, and wash your hands well afterwards. Keep young children away while you clean. Anyone with breathing problems, or who notices a cough or wheeze that does not settle, should speak to a doctor. Vastu supports a clean and airy home; it does not replace medical advice.

07

How do you refresh the balcony after the nest is gone?

Refresh the balcony with a thorough clean, fresh air and a few living, cheerful touches. This turns a neglected corner back into a space the family enjoys.

Wash the floor, grill and ledges, and let sunlight and air dry them. A little sea salt in the mopping water is a traditional cleansing habit where the flooring allows it, though salt should be kept away from pets. Then add healthy plants such as tulsi on a North or East balcony, light seating and a warm light. Our guides to balcony Vastu and fresh air and light cover the arrangement in more detail, and Vastu for pets lists which remedies are safe around animals.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert when the balcony or the North-East of your flat has felt neglected for a long time and you want to bring it back into use, or when you are planning to enclose or redesign a balcony. A Vastu visit will not remove pigeons, but it can help you plan a balcony that feels open, clean and lived in.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar checks balconies as part of a room-by-room consultation, on-site across Mumbai from her Andheri East office or as a distant consultation using floor plans and photographs. Her suggestions use plants, colour, light and other non-structural remedies.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is a pigeon nest in the house good or bad as per Vastu?

Neither. Vastu does not treat a pigeon nest as an omen. The concern is cleanliness and keeping North, East and North-East openings clear, so handle it calmly once any eggs have hatched and the young have flown.

Should a pigeon nest with eggs be removed?

No. Never remove or destroy a nest with eggs or chicks. Wait until the young have flown and the nest is empty, then clean the area and fit netting or covers so pigeons nest elsewhere.

How can pigeons be kept out of the balcony humanely?

After any nest is empty, fit a bird net, add a mesh guard around the AC unit, cover flat ledges, keep food off the balcony and use the space daily. Avoid sticky gels, poison and anything that can injure a bird.

Is it auspicious if a bird builds a nest at home?

Many families see a bird nesting at home as a gentle sign of life, and others simply see it as untidy. Vastu does not treat it as auspicious or inauspicious; let the nesting finish kindly, then keep the space clean.

Are pigeon droppings a health concern at home?

They are a hygiene concern, so clean them regularly with gloves and a mask, dampening them first so they do not raise dust. Anyone with breathing problems should speak to a doctor.

Can netting be put up in a rented flat or a society building?

Usually yes, but check with your landlord and your society first, as many societies have rules about netting on the building face. Fit it only after any nest is empty and no bird is inside.
