In Indian households, animals have long been cared for with affection and respect — cows fed before meals, birds given grain on balconies, community dogs looked after by entire societies. Many Mumbai families now share compact flats with dogs, cats, birds and fish.

The guiding principle is simple: a pet's space should be clean, comfortable, safe and in a zone that suits its nature.

A dog's bed is generally placed in the North-West as per Vastu. This is the zone of वायु (Vayu, the wind) and the Air element, associated with movement, activity and relationships, which suits an active, social companion.

If the North-West is not practical, the West or South-East can also work. Choose a quiet spot with good airflow, away from the main walkway so the dog can rest undisturbed. Avoid placing the bed in the North-East pooja area or in the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre), which should stay open.

A cat's bed also suits the North-West or West, ideally somewhere slightly raised or tucked away, since cats like a sense of safety. Scratching posts and play areas work well in the North-West or West zones of the living room.

Keep the litter tray in the West or South, away from the kitchen, dining area and pooja space. Clean it daily; a neglected litter tray affects the atmosphere of a home far more than its direction does.

An aquarium or fish tank is placed in the North, East or North-East, because these zones relate to the Water element and flow. The ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is traditionally the zone of water.

Avoid the South-East, the Fire zone, and the South-West, which should stay dry and stable. Do not place an aquarium in the bedroom or kitchen. Most importantly, keep the water clean and well filtered, and replace any fish that die promptly, since stale or cloudy water is associated with stagnant energy.

Birds and small pets generally suit the North-West, East or North zones, in a bright, airy spot with fresh air and no direct harsh sun or drafts. Their comfort and welfare come first.

Pet food bowls suit the North-West or West, and water bowls can sit in the North or North-West. Keep them on a washable mat away from the pooja area and the stove.

Wash bowls daily and store pet food in closed containers in a dry South or West cupboard. Spilled food and stale water attract pests, which is both a hygiene and a Vastu concern.
