Gym and Yoga Studio Vastu

01

How is Vastu for a yoga studio different from a gym?

Vastu for a yoga studio focuses on calm, light and stillness, while Vastu for a gym focuses on strength, stability and active energy. Both are wellness spaces, but their character is different, and so is the way the zones are used.

Many studios in Mumbai combine both — a yoga and meditation room alongside a fitness floor, or a single hall used for yoga in the morning and functional training in the evening. The principles below help you balance both qualities in one space, without any construction.

02

Where should the yoga or meditation hall be located?

The yoga or meditation hall is ideally located in the North-East, North or East of the premises. ईशान्य (Ishanya, the North-East) is associated with Water, clarity and spiritual energy, while the East welcomes the morning sun of Surya.

These zones naturally support practices of breath, stillness and awareness — प्राणायाम (pranayama, breath regulation) and meditation in particular. Keep the hall as open and uncluttered as possible, with large windows on the North or East, and store props neatly in cabinets along the South or West walls.

  • 01

    Facing direction

Arrange mats so students face East or North; the teacher may face West or South towards them.

  • 02

    Surya Namaskar

Traditionally practised facing East, towards the rising sun.

  • 03

    Flooring

Wooden or natural flooring feels warm and grounded.

  • 04

    Centre

Keep the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) of the hall completely open.

03

Where should heavy gym equipment be placed?

Heavy gym equipment such as weight racks, squat racks, dumbbell stands and multi-gym machines is well placed in the South, West or South-West. These zones are associated with the Earth element, strength and stability, and can carry weight comfortably in Vastu terms.

Cardio machines such as treadmills, cycles and cross-trainers suit the North-West, the zone of वायु (Vayu, air and movement), or the East. Keep the North-East lighter — stretching mats, a small functional training zone or open floor rather than heavy iron.

04

Where should mirrors be placed in a gym or studio?

Mirrors in a gym or studio are generally placed on the North or East walls. Mirrors are associated with the Water element and are believed to reflect and multiply the energy of whatever they face, so North and East walls, associated with openness and growth, suit them.

  • 01

Avoid mirrors facing the main door

This is believed to push incoming energy back out.

  • 02

Avoid mirrors on South and West walls

Unless a specific reason has been advised.

  • 03

    Yoga rooms

Many yoga teachers prefer fewer mirrors so students look inward; a curtain can cover a mirror wall during meditation.

  • 04

    Maintenance

Replace cracked or distorted mirrors promptly and keep them clean.

05

Where should reception, changing rooms and washrooms go?

Reception suits the North, East or North-East near the entrance, while changing rooms and washrooms suit the West, North-West or South — avoiding the North-East and the centre.

  • 01

    Reception

Bright, welcoming, uncluttered, with the owner or manager facing North or East.

  • 02

    Cash and billing

Kept in the North zone, the direction of Kubera; the cash drawer or locker opens towards the North.

  • 03

    Changing rooms

West or North-West, well ventilated and dry.

  • 04

    Washrooms and showers

Avoid the North-East and the centre; keep exhaust fans working and floors dry.

  • 05

    Lockers

Along the South or West walls.

06

Where should the music system, electrical panels and café go?

The music system, electrical panels, air-conditioning controls and any café or smoothie bar suit the South-East, the Fire zone of अग्नि (Agni). The North-West is an acceptable alternative for the café.

In a yoga studio, sound can also be a healing tool. Soft chanting, singing bowls or gentle instrumental music are commonly used in meditation spaces. Keep speakers discreet and cables tidy so the practice area stays visually calm.

07

Which colours suit a gym and a yoga studio?

Soft, light colours suit a yoga studio, while a gym can use more energetic tones in its active zones. Colour is one of the easiest non-structural Vastu remedies.

  • 01

    Yoga and meditation hall

White, cream, pale yellow, soft green or light blue.

  • 02

    Gym strength zone (South/South-West)

Earthy tones, warm beige, terracotta or a controlled accent of red or orange.

  • 03

    Cardio zone (North-West)

Light grey, white or silver tones.

  • 04

    Reception

Welcoming neutrals with a brand accent colour.

  • 05

    Avoid

Very dark colours across the whole floor, which make a basement or low-light gym feel heavy.

08

How can you keep the energy of a wellness space fresh?

Keep a wellness space fresh through daily cleaning, good ventilation and regular energy cleansing. Gyms and studios see many people every day, and the atmosphere can start to feel heavy.

Open windows between sessions where possible, clean mats and equipment daily, and mop floors with a little sea salt in the water once a week. Sound cleansing with a bell or singing bowl before the first class is a simple ritual. A healthy plant or two in the North or East and a clear entrance keep the space inviting. Some studio owners also choose periodic Reiki Vastu to refresh the premises.

09

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consider consulting a Vastu expert before signing a lease or planning an interior fit-out for a gym or yoga studio, because equipment and hall positions are much easier to plan before installation.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers commercial Vastu with on-site compass measurement across Mumbai, room-by-room planning and non-structural remedies such as colour, metal, pyramids, crystals, sound and Reiki Vastu. Consultations are available from the Andheri East office, or as a distant consultation using layout drawings.
