Dussehra and the Vastu of Starting Something New
Dussehra falls on 20 October 2026 and is traditionally treated as an auspicious day to begin. What to clear out, where to keep something newly bought, and how to set up a desk you are starting fresh at.

01
Why Dussehra is treated as a day to begin
Dussehra, on 20 October 2026, closes the nine nights of Navratri. It is one of the days in the Hindu calendar traditionally considered auspicious in itself, which is why people buy vehicles, open ledgers, begin studies and register businesses on it without looking for a separate मुहूर्त (muhurat, an auspicious time).
Whether or not you follow that reasoning, the practical effect is real. A fixed date that everyone around you also treats as a beginning is a good day to actually start something that has been waiting.
02
Clear what is finished before bringing in what is new
The Vastu advice for any fresh start is unglamorous and comes first. Space has to be made before something is brought into it, and in most homes the obstacle to a new thing is simply that there is nowhere to put it.
Before Dussehra, go through what has already ended.
- Papers and files from work that is complete — scan what matters, discard the rest.
- Clothes and shoes that have not been worn in a year and will not be.
- The broken thing kept because it might get repaired. It will not.
- Old keys, expired cards and dead phones in the drawer by the door.
03
Where should something newly bought be kept?
Vehicles, jewellery, instruments and tools bought on Dussehra are traditionally shown to the household and then given a settled place, rather than left wherever they happened to land.
For anything of value that stays in the home, the south-west is the traditional zone — the heaviest and most stable corner. A locker or cupboard in the south-west, opening towards the north, is the usual arrangement. For a vehicle, the north-west is generally preferred for parking, being the zone associated with movement.
04
Setting up a desk you are starting fresh at
If the new beginning is work — a business, a course, a job from home — the desk matters more than any ritual performed at it.
Sit facing north or east. Keep a solid wall behind you rather than a window or an open doorway. The feeling of having something at your back is not only symbolic, and it is the change people notice fastest. Keep the surface in front of you clear enough to actually work on, and put heavy storage to your south or west.
- Face north for work involving money, negotiation or steady growth.
- Face east for study, learning and anything requiring concentration.
- Avoid sitting with your back to the door, or directly under a beam.
- Keep water — a glass or a small bowl — to the north-east of the desk rather than beside electronics.
05
Registering a business or signing something
If a venture is being formally started, the common practice is to keep the paperwork in the north or north-east of the home or office until it is filed, and to sign facing north or east.
None of this substitutes for the things that actually decide whether a business works — the agreement being sound, the numbers adding up, and the advice of a competent accountant or lawyer. Treat the Vastu as the setting, not the strategy.
06
What not to do on the day
Two things are worth saying plainly. The first is that buying something expensive because the date is auspicious, rather than because you need it, is not a Vastu principle. It is marketing, and October is full of it.
The second is that a good day to start is not a substitute for being ready to start. If the plan is not finished, Dussehra will come again next year.
Questions
Frequently asked
Is Dussehra 2026 a good day to buy a house?
It is traditionally considered auspicious for significant purchases and many people do book property on it. The Vastu of the property itself still matters far more than the date it is booked on, so have the flat checked before you commit to it.
Which direction should I face while starting new work on Dussehra?
North or east. North is the usual choice for anything financial, east for study and learning.
Where should a new vehicle be parked according to Vastu?
The north-west is the zone traditionally associated with movement and is generally preferred. In a Mumbai building you rarely get a choice of parking slot, so treat it as a preference rather than a rule.
Do I need a separate muhurat if I start on Dussehra?
Dussehra is traditionally counted among the days considered auspicious in themselves, which is precisely why it is used for beginnings without a separate muhurat being calculated.
Should the house be cleaned again for Dussehra after Navratri?
A full clean is not needed if the house was prepared before Navratri. Clearing what has finished — old paperwork, projects that ended — is the part that belongs to Dussehra.
