Office Opening Pooja and Vastu for a New Business

Opening a new office soon? Here is what to set up before the opening pooja as per Vastu: the entrance, the owner's seat, the cash and accounts area, the pooja shelf and a first-day checklist.

Office Opening Pooja and Vastu for a New Business

01

What should be ready before an office opening as per Vastu?

Before an office opening, four things should be ready as per Vastu: a clear entrance, a settled seat for the owner, a fixed place for cash and accounts, and a clean spot for prayer. Once these are in place, the opening pooja has a prepared space to bless.

Many new offices in Mumbai are rented, shared or fitted out by the landlord, so walls and doors cannot move. That is fine. Almost everything in this guide is about where you place furniture and how you keep the space, not about construction.

02

Who decides the muhurat for the opening pooja?

The मुहूर्त (muhurat, the auspicious time) for an office opening is chosen by your family priest or from the पंचांग (panchang, the traditional Hindu almanac), not by Vastu. Vastu looks at space and direction; the muhurat is a matter of time and belongs to a different tradition.

So ask your priest for the day and hour, and use Vastu to get the office ready for it. Many businesses begin with a Ganesh pooja and a Lakshmi pooja, but the form is yours to choose with the priest.

03

How should the office entrance look on opening day?

The entrance should be clean, well lit and free of anything blocking the door on opening day. In Vastu the main door is where people, work and opportunity enter, so it is prepared first.

  • 01

    Name plate

Fix a clear, straight name board that can be read from the lift lobby or the road.

  • 02

    Door

Check that it opens fully and smoothly, without creaking or scraping the floor.

  • 03

    Light

Replace dim or flickering bulbs outside and just inside the door.

  • 04

    Clear floor

Remove cartons, shoe racks and dustbins from the doorway.

  • 05

    Welcome

A fresh toran of flowers or mango leaves is a traditional welcome on the first day.

04

Where should the owner sit in a new office?

The owner should sit in the South-West part of the office, facing North or East. The South-West is the zone of the Earth element and is traditionally linked with stability and steady decisions.

Keep a solid wall behind the chair and not a window or a door. If the cabin is fixed elsewhere, turn the desk so that you still face North or East while working. A simple compass app or the free direction finder will show you which way your desk faces today.

05

Where should cash, accounts and the pooja shelf go?

Cash and accounts belong in the North of the office, and the pooja shelf belongs in the North-East. The North is the direction of कुबेर (Kubera, the keeper of wealth), and the North-East, called ईशान्य (Ishanya), is the zone of prayer and clear thinking.

  • 01

    Accounts desk

Seat the accounts person in the North, facing North or East.

  • 02

    Locker or cash box

Place it so that its door opens towards the North; keep it tidy and locked.

  • 03

    Pooja shelf

A small, clean wall shelf in the North-East is enough; it need not be a full mandir.

  • 04

    Heavy items

Put cupboards and old records along the South and West walls.

06

What is a simple first-day checklist for a new office?

A simple first-day checklist is to clean, light, pray and then begin real work. Keep the day calm; a small, sincere start is enough.

  • 01

    The day before

Sweep and mop the whole office, including corners, the pantry and the washroom.

  • 02

    Repairs

Fix leaking taps, broken chairs and any stopped wall clock before the pooja.

  • 03

    Lamp

Light a diya at the pooja shelf, on a stable plate and away from paper.

  • 04

    First work

Do one real task after the pooja, such as raising the first invoice or signing the first order.

07

What if the office is rented and nothing can be changed?

If the office is rented, work with placement instead of construction. Facing direction, seat position, light, colour and cleanliness can all be adjusted without touching a wall.

A pooja shelf can be a small tray on a clean cabinet in the North-East. Where a toilet, pantry or entrance falls in a difficult zone, there are non-structural remedies, and these are usually what a consultant advises for commercial spaces in Mumbai.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert before you sign the lease or finalise the interior plan, because seating and cabin positions are easy to change on paper and hard to change later. It also helps when the entrance direction is unclear or the office has an irregular shape.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya works from Andheri East and visits offices across Mumbai, and also advises from floor plans and photographs. Remedies are non-structural and come in a written report. You can book an appointment ahead of your opening day.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction should the owner face in a new office?

The owner should face North or East while sitting in the South-West part of the office. North is traditionally linked with wealth and East with growth and new beginnings. Keep a solid wall behind the chair, and avoid sitting with your back to the main door or directly under a beam.

Does Vastu decide the date and time of an office opening?

No, Vastu does not decide the date or time of an office opening. The muhurat is chosen by a priest or from the panchang, which is a separate tradition about time. Vastu helps you prepare the space, so that the entrance, seating, cash area and pooja shelf are ready before that day.

Where should the pooja be done in a new office?

The pooja is traditionally done in the North-East of the office, where a small, clean shelf can be kept afterwards for daily prayer. If the North-East is not free, the East is the next choice. Avoid setting up the pooja shelf beside a washroom wall or under a staircase.

Where should the cash locker be kept in an office?

The cash locker is traditionally kept in the North, the direction of Kubera, or against the South wall so that its door opens towards the North. Keep it clean, locked and free of old papers. Avoid placing it directly under a beam or in line with the main door.

What should be avoided on the office opening day?

Avoid opening with unfinished repairs, a cluttered entrance or a dark North-East corner. Do not leave broken furniture, dead plants or packing cartons lying in the centre of the office. Keep the pooja simple and safe, with lamps away from paper and curtains, and begin some real work the same day.
