Vastu vs Feng Shui: Key Differences Explained
Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui both aim to harmonise spaces, but they differ in origin, elements, directions and remedies. Here is a clear comparison — and why mixing them can confuse your home.

What is the main difference between Vastu and Feng Shui?
The main difference is that Vastu Shastra is an Indian system based on Vedic principles, the five elements and fixed compass directions, while Feng Shui is a Chinese system based on the flow of chi, the balance of yin and yang and a different set of five elements. Both aim to create spaces that support well-being, but they arrive there through different frameworks, vocabularies and remedies.
Understanding these differences helps you read advice critically — especially online, where tips from both traditions are often blended together without explanation.

Where do Vastu and Feng Shui come from?
Vastu Shastra
Originates in ancient India and is described in traditional texts on architecture and town planning. It developed alongside temple architecture and the design of homes, and uses the Vastu Purusha Mandala — a grid that maps energies onto a site.
Feng Shui
Originates in ancient China. The name means “wind and water”. It developed partly from the practice of choosing favourable sites for homes and graves, and has several schools, including the Form school, which reads landscape, and the Compass school, which uses a special compass.

How are the five elements different in Vastu and Feng Shui?
Both systems speak of five elements, but they are not the same five. This is one of the clearest differences between them.
Vastu's Panch Tatva
Earth (Prithvi), Water (Jal), Fire (Agni), Air (Vayu) and Space (Akash). Each element is linked to a direction — for example, fire to the South-East, water to the North-East and earth to the South-West.
Feng Shui's Wu Xing
Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. These are understood as phases that feed or control one another in cycles, and are balanced using colours, shapes and materials.

Do Vastu and Feng Shui treat directions the same way?
No — Vastu assigns fixed meanings to the eight compass directions and the centre, while Feng Shui often works with the Bagua map and, in some schools, personal directions based on a person's birth details. As a result, the same corner of a room can carry different recommendations in each system.
In Vastu, the North-East (Ishan) is kept light, clean and open and suits the pooja corner; the South-East (Agneya) suits the kitchen; the South-West (Nairutya) suits the master bedroom and heavy furniture; and the centre (Brahmasthan) is kept open. A Feng Shui Bagua reading, by contrast, may place areas such as “wealth” or “relationships” in different positions. This is why Vastu and Feng Shui tips copied side by side can contradict each other.

How are Vastu remedies different from Feng Shui remedies?
Vastu remedies focus on balancing the five elements in the correct zones, while Feng Shui remedies commonly use objects such as wind chimes, bamboo plants, lucky figurines and bagua mirrors.
Typical Vastu remedies
Correct placement of rooms and furniture, colour therapy by zone, activated pyramids, metal strips, salt, crystals placed by direction, light and sound, and home-based rituals.
Typical Feng Shui remedies
Wind chimes, water features, bagua mirrors, symbolic figurines and arrangements based on the Bagua map.
Where they overlap
Both value decluttering, natural light, fresh air, a welcoming entrance and a calm, well-maintained space.

Which is better for Indian homes: Vastu or Feng Shui?
For most Indian homes, Vastu is the more natural fit, because it grew out of the Indian climate, building traditions and way of life — for example, placing the kitchen where the fire element and morning light support cooking, and keeping the North-East open for light and prayer. Indian flats, pooja corners and family routines map easily onto Vastu zones.
That said, neither system should make you anxious. The goal is a home that feels balanced and supportive. If you enjoy a decorative object from another tradition, simply make sure it does not clash with a Vastu zone — for instance, avoid heavy clutter in the North-East.

Can you mix Vastu and Feng Shui in one home?
It is usually wise not to mix the two systems' rules, because their direction maps and remedies can point in opposite directions. Following one coherent framework avoids confusion, such as moving a cash locker or a plant back and forth based on conflicting tips.
If you have already placed Feng Shui items at home, you do not need to throw them away in a panic. A Vastu consultant can review them and suggest which ones are neutral decor and which may be sitting in an unsuitable zone.

Not exactly. Both aim to harmonise spaces, but they developed independently in India and China, with different elements, direction systems and remedies. They share some common-sense ideas such as decluttering and good light.

Can I follow Vastu and Feng Shui together?
