Room Energy Reset: A Weekend Cleanse for Your Space
Room feeling stuck? A simple two-day room energy cleanse for students and young people: declutter, air, salt, sound, a desk reset and a vibe that lasts.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
What is a room energy cleanse?
A room energy cleanse is a planned reset of your space that clears physical clutter and refreshes how the room feels. Think of it as a deep clean with intention: you are not just tidying, you are deciding how you want your room to support you.
Vastu Shastra, India's traditional science of space, has always linked the feel of a room with light, air, order and direction. You do not need to believe in anything mystical to notice that a clean, bright, well-arranged room feels better to study, create and rest in.
02
When does your room need a reset?
Your room needs a reset when you start avoiding it, cannot focus in it, or feel tired the moment you walk in. Common signs are a chair buried under clothes, a desk you never use, and a corner you do not want to look at.
Exam season, the end of a semester, a breakup, a new job or simply a long, messy month are all good moments for a reset. If you are going through something heavy emotionally, a tidy room can help a little, but talk to someone you trust too.
03
Saturday morning: how do you declutter properly?
Declutter properly by emptying one area at a time and sorting everything into keep, donate, recycle and bin. Start with the floor and the bed, then the desk, then the wardrobe.
Be kind to yourself while sorting. If something holds strong memories, put it in a single memory box instead of deciding right away. Donate clothes in good condition, recycle paper and e-waste responsibly, and take the bags out of the room the same day so they do not become new clutter.
01
Set a timer
Work in 25-minute rounds with short breaks, and put on a playlist you like.
02
Clear the floor
Nothing should live on the floor except furniture and a rug.
03
Broken stuff out
Dead chargers, broken earphones, dried pens and old bills go.
04
Under the bed
Clear it or use closed storage boxes; avoid random piles.
05
Digital desk
Bonus: clear your laptop desktop and phone downloads too.
04
Saturday afternoon: how do light, air and salt refresh a room?
Light, air and salt refresh a room by removing staleness and moisture and making the space feel lighter. Open every window for at least an hour, switch on the fan and let sunlight reach the corners.
Wash your bedsheets, pillow covers and curtains. Then try a simple salt remedy used in Vastu: place a small glass or ceramic bowl of sea salt in each corner of the room, or add a handful of salt to your mopping water. Replace bowl salt weekly and throw used salt away down the drain, not in plants.
05
Saturday evening: how can sound change the vibe?
Sound changes the vibe by breaking up the heavy, quiet feeling of a stuck room. Ring a small bell or play a singing bowl recording while walking slowly around the room, especially into the corners.
Clapping firmly in each corner is a no-cost version. Some people like to finish with calm instrumental music or chanting such as ॐ (Om). If you use camphor, incense or a candle, keep windows open, stay in the room, and never leave a flame alone.
06
Sunday: how should you rearrange your desk and bed?
Rearrange your desk so you face East or North while studying or working, and your bed so your head points South or East while sleeping. These are two of the most practical Vastu tips for students and young adults.
01
Wall behind you
Sit with a solid wall behind your chair rather than the door.
02
Light from the side
Natural light from the left or front helps reading.
03
Charging station
Keep chargers and devices on the South-East side of the room and away from your pillow.
04
Mirror check
Avoid a mirror reflecting your bed; cover it at night if needed.
05
One green thing
A small plant in the North or East adds life.
07
How do you keep the reset going?
Keep the reset going with a five-minute nightly tidy and one small weekly ritual. Put clothes away, clear the desk and open the window each morning.
Every Sunday, change the salt bowls, water your plant and wipe your desk. Once a month, do a quick scan for things that have piled up again. The goal is not a perfect Pinterest room, but a space that feels like yours and helps you breathe.
08
When to consult a Vastu expert
Consult a Vastu expert if your room, or your whole home, still feels heavy after a proper reset, or if you are moving into a new flat or hostel room and want to set it up right from day one.
Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar consults from VastuKimaya in Andheri East, visits homes across Mumbai and offers distant consultations using a floor plan and photos. She also offers Reiki space healing. If you are struggling emotionally, please reach out to a mental-health professional. In India you can call the free Tele-MANAS helpline on 14416 (or 1-800-891-4416), available 24×7.
Questions
Frequently asked
How often should I cleanse my room's energy?
A light reset every week and a deeper cleanse every month or after a stressful phase works well for most people.
Is salt really used for cleansing in Vastu?
Yes, sea salt is a traditional cleansing remedy in Vastu, used in bowls or added to mopping water, and replaced regularly.
Which direction should my study desk face?
Your study desk should let you face East or North while working.
Can I do a room cleanse in a shared hostel room?
Yes. Focus on your own bed, desk and shelf: declutter, wash linen, add a small salt bowl and play calm music with headphones if needed.
Is it safe to burn sage or camphor in my room?
Only with windows open and under supervision, and avoid it if anyone has asthma or breathing issues. Sound and salt are smoke-free alternatives.
