Kirana and Grocery Store Vastu

01

What is a good Vastu layout for a grocery shop?

A good Vastu layout for a grocery shop keeps heavy things in the South and West, light and open space in the North and East, and a clear path from the door to the counter. The idea is that the shop feels easy to enter and the owner sits in a steady position.

A kirana store holds heavy sacks, tins and a fridge in a very small area, so the layout has to be practical first. General points on signboards, lighting and daily habits are covered in our guide to shop Vastu for footfall; this article stays with the grocery store.

02

Where should the counter be, and which way should the owner face?

The counter should be on the South or West side of the shop, so that the owner sits in the South-West and faces North or East. The South-West is the zone of the Earth element and is traditionally linked with stability.

Most kirana shops have a counter right at the front, because customers are served from the footpath. That is fine. Place your stool towards the South or West end of that counter and turn it so that you look North or East while billing. Keep a wall or a full rack behind you, not an open passage. To check which way your counter faces, use the free direction finder.

03

Where should the cash drawer and weighing scale be kept?

The cash drawer, the गल्ला (galla, the shopkeeper's cash box), should open towards the North, and if that is not possible, towards the East. The North is the direction of कुबेर (Kubera, the keeper of wealth).

Classical Vastu does not name a place for a modern weighing scale. Good sense fills the gap: keep it on a level part of the counter, clean, and where the customer can read the display. A clearly visible weight builds trust.

  • 01

    Tidy drawer

Keep notes sorted and remove old bills, rubber bands and torn notes.

  • 02

    No leaning stock

Do not pile packets on the cash drawer or the scale.

04

Where should heavy stock like grains and oil tins go?

Heavy stock such as grain sacks, flour, sugar, pulses and oil tins should go along the South and West walls and in the South-West corner. Vastu keeps weight in these directions and leaves the North and East lighter.

Heavy items at floor level against a back wall are also safer to lift and do not block the customer's way. Raise sacks on a wooden pallet so that damp from the floor in the monsoon does not spoil them.

05

Which items should be kept near the entrance?

Light, fast-moving items should be kept near the entrance side: biscuits, snacks, bread, small sachets, soaps and daily-use packets. They are easy to see, easy to reach and bring a customer in for a quick purchase.

The North-West is the zone of वायु (Vayu, the Air element) and is traditionally linked with movement, so goods you want to sell quickly are often placed there. Avoid hanging so much at the front that the inside of the shop cannot be seen from the road.

06

Where should the fridge and freezer be placed?

The fridge and freezer are electrical equipment, so they suit the South-East, the zone of अग्नि (Agni, the Fire element). If the South-East is not available, the North-West is the usual second choice.

Avoid the North-East corner for a fridge, since that zone is kept light and clean. Leave a gap behind the unit for air, keep the plug point dry and never run it through a loose extension cord.

07

How do you keep the entrance clear in a narrow Mumbai shop?

Keep the entrance clear by fixing one rule: nothing is stored on the floor in the doorway. In a narrow shop the door is the only opening for light, air and customers, so every carton there costs you space.

  • 01

    Unload and shift

Move new stock inside as soon as the delivery tempo leaves.

  • 02

    Use height

Wall racks up to the ceiling on the South and West free the floor.

  • 03

    Dustbin

Keep the bin covered and inside, away from the threshold.

08

When to consult a Vastu expert for your store

Consult a Vastu expert before you take a new shop on rent, before you order fixed racks, or when the store feels stuck even though the location and service are good. The exact position of the entrance is worth checking with a compass.

Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar of VastuKimaya advises shops across Mumbai from her Andheri East office and through distant consultations using a floor plan and photographs. Remedies are non-structural, which suits rented shops. See commercial Vastu for how a consultation works. Vastu supports a well-run store; it does not replace fair prices and good service.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which direction should a grocery shop owner face?

A grocery shop owner should face North or East while sitting at the counter. The seat is ideally in the South-West part of the shop with a wall or a full rack behind it. If the counter is fixed at the front, turn the stool so that you still look North or East while billing.

Where should rice and wheat sacks be kept in a shop?

Rice, wheat, flour and other heavy sacks should be kept along the South and West walls or in the South-West corner. Raise them on a wooden pallet to protect them from damp. Keep the North and East sides lighter, with smaller packets, glass jars and open shelves.

Where should the fridge be kept in a grocery shop?

The fridge or freezer suits the South-East of the shop, the zone of Fire, where electrical equipment is traditionally placed. The North-West is the second choice. Avoid the North-East corner, leave air space behind the unit and keep the wiring dry and in good condition.

Can Vastu increase sales in a grocery shop?

Vastu cannot promise sales. What it offers is a layout that is said to support steady work: a clear entrance, a settled seat for the owner, an orderly cash area and stock that moves. These changes also make the shop easier to enter and to run, which customers notice.

What should not be kept in the North-East of a shop?

Avoid heavy sacks, oil tins, the dustbin, brooms and the fridge in the North-East of a shop. This corner is kept clean, light and bright. A small pooja shelf, drinking water or light packets suit it. If stock must stay there for lack of space, keep it low and tidy.
