Distance Reiki: How Healing Works Without Being There

01

What is distance Reiki healing?

Distance Reiki healing is a form of Reiki in which the practitioner sends Reiki energy to a person who is not physically present. The receiver may be in another part of Mumbai, another city or another country.

Reiki is a Japanese practice whose name joins two ideas: Rei, universal, and Ki, life energy — close to what Indian traditions call प्राण (prana, life energy). In an in-person session, the practitioner places hands lightly on or just above the body. In distance Reiki, the same intention and attention are offered without touch or proximity.

02

How can Reiki work without being in the same room?

Reiki practitioners understand distance Reiki as working through intention and connection rather than physical contact. The traditional view is that life energy is not limited by walls or kilometres, so a focused practitioner can direct it to a person wherever they are.

It is honest to say that this is a matter of experience and belief rather than scientific proof. What many receivers do report is a sense of deep rest, warmth, lightness or emotional release during or after a session. Even if you are unsure about the mechanism, the simple act of lying down in a quiet room for a dedicated half hour, knowing someone is holding you in care, can feel restorative.

03

How does a distance Reiki session work?

A distance Reiki session usually follows a clear, simple structure agreed in advance.

  • A conversation first

You share what you are experiencing — stress, restlessness, a difficult phase — and any medical care you are receiving.

  • Consent and timing

Reiki is only sent with the receiver's permission. A time is fixed so you can be resting when the session begins.

  • Connecting

The practitioner sits quietly, sets an intention, and connects using your name, a photograph or a symbolic surrogate such as a pillow or small figure.

  • Channelling Reiki

Reiki is offered in a sequence, much like the hand positions of an in-person session, for the agreed duration.

  • Feedback

Afterwards you can share how you felt by phone or message, and discuss any next steps.

04

How should I prepare for a distance Reiki session?

Prepare for a distance Reiki session by choosing a quiet, comfortable spot where you will not be disturbed for the full duration. A few small steps make a noticeable difference:

  • Silence notifications

Put your phone on silent or in another room once you have confirmed the start time.

  • Lie down or sit comfortably

Loose clothing, a light blanket and a pillow under the knees help the body relax.

  • Freshen the room

Open a window beforehand, dim the lights and, if you like, light a diya or use a gentle aroma such as lavender.

  • Set your own intention

Silently note what you would like to feel — calm, rested, lighter — without forcing any outcome.

  • Hydrate afterwards

Drink water and give yourself a few unhurried minutes before returning to screens or chores.

05

What do people commonly feel during distance Reiki?

People commonly feel relaxation, warmth, tingling, heaviness in the limbs or a drifting, sleepy state during distance Reiki. Some feel emotional, some feel very little in the moment and notice calm later in the day, and some fall asleep. All of these are normal.

There is no right or wrong experience. If you feel nothing in particular, the session still offered you a period of genuine rest, which is valuable in a busy city life.

06

Who is distance Reiki suitable for?

Distance Reiki is suitable for people who cannot easily travel for a session, who prefer the comfort of their own home, or who live outside Mumbai. It is often chosen by:

  • Busy professionals

People who can spare thirty minutes at home but not a commute across the city.

  • Elders and family members

Parents or grandparents who find travel tiring, with their consent.

  • People living abroad

Families spread across cities or countries who want to stay connected to a familiar practitioner.

  • Those in a demanding phase

People going through exams, a job change, a move or a family difficulty who would value a restful pause.

07

Can distance Reiki replace medical treatment?

No, distance Reiki cannot replace medical or psychological treatment. It is a complementary wellness practice that may help you feel more relaxed and emotionally balanced.

Continue any medication, therapy or treatment your doctor has advised, and never stop or change it because of a Reiki session. If you are going through severe stress, anxiety or low mood, please reach out to a doctor or mental-health professional alongside any energy practice you find supportive.

08

How is distance Reiki different from in-person Reiki?

Distance Reiki differs from in-person Reiki mainly in setting, not in intention: you rest in your own home, and there is no hands-on or hands-near contact. The practitioner follows a similar sequence and offers the same focused attention.

Some people prefer the familiarity of their own bed and the absence of travel, which can make it easier to relax fully. Others enjoy the reassurance of the practitioner being physically present. Many choose a mix — an in-person session to begin with, then distance sessions for ongoing support. Neither format is superior; the right choice is simply the one that helps you rest.

09

When to book a distance Reiki session

Book a distance Reiki session when you would like a calm, restful pause but cannot come in person, or when you want ongoing support between in-person visits. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar offers both in-person Reiki at her Andheri East office in Mumbai and distance Reiki for people in other locations.

She also offers Reiki Vastu — Reiki for spaces — which can be combined with a distant Vastu consultation using your floor plan and photographs, so both you and your home receive gentle attention. ॐ शान्तिः (Om Shanti — peace).

Questions

Frequently asked

Does distance Reiki work as well as in-person Reiki?

Many Reiki practitioners consider distance Reiki as effective as in-person Reiki, because it is based on intention rather than touch. Experiences vary from person to person, and some people simply prefer the feel of an in-person session.

Do I need to do anything during a distance Reiki session?

You do not need to do anything except rest quietly. Lie or sit comfortably, breathe naturally and let yourself relax for the agreed time.

Can Reiki be sent to someone without their permission?

Reiki is traditionally sent only with the receiver's permission. For young children, parents give consent, and it should always be offered respectfully.

How long is a distance Reiki session?

A distance Reiki session commonly lasts around thirty to forty-five minutes. The exact duration is agreed with the practitioner before the session.

Can distance Reiki be done for a home or office?

Yes, Reiki can be sent to spaces as well as people; this is often called Reiki Vastu or space healing. It is usually combined with a Vastu assessment of the floor plan.
