It is important to be clear: Vastu does not treat illness or influence clinical outcomes. It is concerned with the environment in which care is given — light, flow, order and atmosphere — and works entirely alongside medical skill, ethics and good practice. A clinic entrance ideally faces East or North, as these directions are considered auspicious and are associated with fresh energy and opportunity. The entrance should be wide, well lit and easy for patients to find.

Many clinics in Mumbai are in commercial complexes or residential buildings where the door position cannot be changed. In that case, focus on what you can control: a clean, clearly marked door, good lighting, a ramp or accessible entry where possible, and no clutter around the threshold. Non-structural remedies can balance a less favourable entrance.

The reception should be near the entrance, ideally with the desk in the North-East or East of the clinic, and the receptionist facing East or North while working.

The waiting area should be spacious, well ventilated and comfortable. Seating along the South or West walls lets patients face North or East while they wait. Keep the area bright and clean, with a few healthy plants, a water dispenser and reading material neatly arranged. Avoid overcrowding chairs, and keep medical waste, stock cartons and staff belongings out of sight.

Patients then sit across the desk, facing South or West. Avoid sitting with your back to the door or a window, or directly under a beam. Keep the desk clear of unnecessary files and samples, with only what you need for the consultation.

The examination couch is traditionally placed in the South-West or West of the consultation room, with the patient's head towards the South or West when lying down. This supports a sense of rest and security.

Electrical and diagnostic equipment suits the South-East of the room, the zone of Agni and Fire. Sterilisers, heaters and computers can also be placed here. The North-East of the room is ideally kept light — a wash basin or a small plant works well. Keep cables tidy and equipment well maintained.

Soothing, light colours suit a clinic — pastel greens, soft blues, cream and off-white create a calm, clean and reassuring atmosphere.

Toilets in a clinic are ideally placed in the North-West or West, pantries in the South-East, and stock or record storage in the South or South-West. Avoid toilets in the North-East and the centre of the premises.

Staff areas and nurses' stations work well in the North-West or South-East. Keep all these spaces clean, well ventilated and organised — hygiene and order are both a medical necessity and a Vastu principle.

Simple changes help an existing clinic without any renovation: rearranging the doctor's chair, refreshing colours, improving light and clearing clutter. Many established practices benefit from these small steps.
