Wardrobe and Almirah Vastu: Placement for Stability

An almirah or wardrobe is ideally placed against the South, West or South-West wall of a room. These are the zones where Vastu prefers weight, height and solidity.

The South-West is ruled by Nairutya and associated with the earth element, stability and holding on to what you have. Heavy furniture here is believed to anchor the room and the people who use it. The South, the zone of Yama, and the West, the zone of Varuna, are also comfortable places for tall storage.

Almirah doors should ideally open towards the North or East. When the almirah stands against the South or West wall, this happens naturally — you face North or East as you open it.

The North is linked with Kubera and opportunity, and the East with Surya, growth and new beginnings. Opening storage towards these directions is traditionally associated with inflow rather than outflow. If a sliding wardrobe does not have a clear opening direction, simply make sure you stand facing North or East when using it.

The cash locker or tijori should be kept inside an almirah on the South or West wall, opening towards the North. This is one of the most commonly followed rules in Vastu for money and valuables.

Avoid placing heavy wardrobes in the North-East and the centre of the room or home. These zones are meant to be light and open.

Mirrored wardrobes are acceptable as long as the mirror does not reflect the bed. Vastu, like mirror therapy, treats mirrors as objects that double and bounce energy, which is not ideal where you want rest.

If a mirrored wardrobe already faces the bed, you do not need to replace it. Cover the mirror with a light curtain or fabric panel at night, or apply a frosted film to part of it. Mirrors on wardrobes on the North or East walls are generally more comfortable than those on the South or West.

If built-in wardrobes are on the North or East wall, as often happens in Mumbai flats, you can balance them without breaking anything. Most flats are designed around space constraints rather than Vastu, and non-structural remedies work well here.

Organise your almirah so that it holds only what you use, love or genuinely need. In Vastu, clutter inside closed storage is still clutter; it is believed to hold stagnant energy.

Every few months, clear out clothes that no longer fit, broken items and papers you no longer need. Donate what is usable. Keep heavier items on the lower shelves and lighter items higher up. A small sachet of rock salt or camphor in a corner of the almirah keeps it fresh, in the spirit of salt therapy. Keep the almirah clean inside and out, and repair broken hinges and handles promptly.
