Reiki and Sleep: What It Can and Cannot Help With
Poor sleep is the most common reason people book a session. An honest account of what relaxation practices do and do not address, which sleep problems need a doctor instead, and what to change in the bedroom first.
By Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar, Vastu consultant, Andheri East, Mumbai

01
Why people book for sleep
Of everything people arrive with, sleep — निद्रा (nidra) — is the most common. Usually it is not that they cannot sleep at all, but that they cannot stop — the mind keeps going after the body has finished, and bedtime becomes the quietest hour of a loud day, which is when everything surfaces.
That is the pattern a relaxation practice has something to offer. It is also only one of several reasons people sleep badly, and the others need different help.
02
What a relaxation practice can reasonably address
What is honest to say is this: an hour of lying still, undisturbed, with nothing required of you, tends to leave people calmer, and people who are calmer at bedtime generally settle more easily.
Clients commonly report falling asleep during the session itself, sleeping more deeply the same night, and finding it easier to put the day down. None of that is a treatment for a sleep disorder, and it is not offered as one.

When to see a doctor instead
Some sleep problems are medical, and the kindest thing a complementary practitioner can do is say so rather than book you in.
Please see a doctor, and do not substitute any practice for that, if any of the following apply.
- Loud snoring, gasping or choking in sleep, or being told you stop breathing — these need assessment for sleep apnoea.
- Falling asleep during the day despite a full night, or while driving.
- Sleep that has been badly disturbed for several weeks and is affecting your work or mood.
- Waking in pain, breathless, or needing to pass urine repeatedly.
- Early-morning waking with low mood, loss of interest or hopelessness — these can be signs of depression and are treatable.
- Any new sleep problem alongside another unexplained symptom.
04
What to change in the bedroom first
Before booking anything, several of the most effective changes cost nothing. In Vastu terms the bedroom is a rest space, and much of the traditional guidance happens to agree with ordinary sleep advice.
The overlap is worth using, because these are the cheapest interventions available.
- Sleep with the head towards the south or east, the traditional arrangement; avoid north where there is an alternative.
- Move the bed out from directly under a beam, or box the beam in with a false ceiling.
- Take work out of the bedroom — the desk, the files, the laptop left open on the dresser.
- No mirror facing the bed, which is both a Vastu convention and a practical one in a dark room.
- Clear what is stored under the bed, which in most Mumbai flats is a great deal.
- Keep the room genuinely dark and a little cool, and keep the phone charging across the room rather than beside your head.

What a session involves if you do book
You stay fully clothed and lie comfortably while the practitioner's hands rest on or just above a sequence of positions. There is no massage or pressure. Most people describe warmth and heaviness, and a great many fall asleep, which is not a problem.
Sessions are available in person in Andheri East or at a distance, which suits people who are housebound, outside Mumbai, or abroad.

Said plainly
Reiki is not a treatment for insomnia or any other condition, it does not replace medical care, and no responsible practitioner will suggest you stop, delay or reduce anything your doctor has prescribed, including sleep medication.
If you are struggling emotionally, free mental health support is available in India through Tele-MANAS on 14416. If sleep has been poor for weeks, start with your doctor, and treat anything else as something you add alongside, not instead.
Questions
Frequently asked
Can Reiki cure insomnia?
No. It is a relaxation practice, not a treatment for insomnia or any other sleep disorder. People who sleep badly because they are wound up often report settling more easily, which is a different claim.
Which direction should the head face for better sleep?
South or east is the traditional Vastu arrangement, with north generally avoided where there is an alternative.
When should poor sleep be seen by a doctor?
If you snore loudly, gasp or stop breathing in sleep, fall asleep during the day, have been badly disturbed for several weeks, or have low mood alongside early waking, see a doctor.
Is it a problem if I fall asleep during the session?
Not at all. It is very common, and nothing is lost by it.
Can I have a session if I take sleep medication?
Yes, and you should continue taking anything your doctor has prescribed. No practitioner should ask you to reduce or stop medication.
