Navratri Vastu: Where the Kalash Goes and What to Clear First
Navratri 2026 begins on 11 October. Where to place the ghatasthapana kalash, which way to face, what to clear out of the house beforehand, and what to do with the space once the nine nights are over.

02
Where should the ghatasthapana kalash be placed?
The north-east is the traditional place. In Vastu this corner is treated as the lightest and most open part of a home, which is why puja spaces are usually put there, and why you are told to keep it free of heavy storage and clutter.
If your home has a dedicated puja room or niche, use it rather than creating a second spot. If it does not, the north-east corner of the living room works perfectly well. What matters more than the exact spot is that it is clean, that it is not under a staircase or against a toilet wall, and that nobody has to step over it for nine days.
- Raise the kalash off the floor on a low wooden platform or a clean cloth rather than placing it directly on tiles.
- Keep the space immediately above it clear — no shelf, loft or beam loaded with storage.
- Avoid the space directly under a staircase, and any wall shared with a bathroom.
- Once established, do not move it. Choose the place carefully the first time.
03
Which direction should you face during the puja?
Face east or north while performing the puja. East is the usual first choice for morning rituals, north for anything to do with steady increase. Both are traditional and either is correct, so pick whichever your room allows without forcing furniture into awkward positions.
The lamp is generally kept to the south-east of the kalash, the fire corner of the home. Where the layout does not allow it, placing the lamp to the right of the kalash is the common practical compromise.
04
What should be cleared before the first day?
This is the real work, and the order helps. Start at the north-east and move clockwise through the house, finishing in the south-west. The reasoning is simple enough: begin where you want things lightest and end where weight belongs.
What usually needs to go is not dirt but accumulation — the things kept because throwing them away felt wasteful.
- Broken and chipped items: crockery, mirrors, picture frames, clocks that stopped years ago.
- Dead electronics and tangled cables kept in a drawer in case they are ever needed.
- Medicine past its date, and cosmetics nobody has opened in a year.
- Anything stored in the north-east corner that is heavy or rarely touched.
- Dried flowers and dead plants, which are traditionally cleared before a festival rather than kept.
05
What about the entrance?
The main door gets the most attention during Navratri and deserves it. Clean the threshold properly, repair a doorbell that does not work or a light that has fused, and cut the shoe rack back to what is actually worn.
Rangoli and torans are not only decoration in this tradition — they mark the entrance as cared for. A doorway that is swept, lit and in working order has done most of the job before anything is hung on it.
06
What happens to the space after the nine nights?
Once the festival closes, the usual guidance is to immerse or respectfully retire the kalash contents rather than leaving them to dry out in the corner, and then to keep the cleared north-east clear.
That last part is where most households lose the benefit. The corner is emptied for Navratri and refilled with boxes by December. If you keep one thing from the preparation, keep the north-east the way you left it on the first day.
Questions
Frequently asked
In which direction should the Navratri kalash be placed?
The north-east of the home is the traditional placement, in the puja space if you have one. Sit facing east or north while performing the puja.
Can the Navratri puja be set up in a bedroom?
It is better avoided where there is any alternative, as bedrooms are rest spaces in this tradition. If there is genuinely no other room, use the north-east corner of the bedroom, keep it screened, and do not place it at the foot of the bed or against a bathroom wall.
What if my flat has no clear north-east corner?
Many Mumbai flats do not. Use the north or east side of the main living space instead, keep it clean and undisturbed, and do not improvise a spot under the stairs or beside a toilet wall.
Should the lamp burn for all nine days?
An akhand jyoti is a traditional practice but a personal choice, not a requirement. If you keep one, place it safely away from curtains and anything that can catch, and never leave it unattended in an empty home.
Does Navratri cleaning have to be finished before the first day?
Ideally the clearing is done before ghatasthapana, so the nine days are not spent sorting cupboards. If time is short, prioritise the entrance, the puja area and the north-east corner.
