How a Vastu Consultant Uses a Compass

Every Vastu analysis begins with direction. Here is how a Vastu compass reading is taken, why readings can go wrong in Mumbai flats, and how a consultant turns it into a zone map.

How a Vastu Consultant Uses a Compass

01

Why is a compass central to Vastu?

A compass is central to Vastu because every Vastu principle depends on direction. Whether the kitchen is in the South-East, the pooja room in the North-East or the master bedroom in the South-West can only be known once North is marked accurately.

Each direction is associated with a deity and an element — Kubera in the North, Isha in the North-East, Agni in the South-East, Nairutya in the South-West, and so on. If the direction is misjudged by even a small angle, a room can appear to be in the wrong zone, and the remedies suggested may not suit the home. A careful compass reading protects you from unnecessary worry and misplaced changes.

02

What kind of compass does a Vastu consultant use?

A Vastu consultant typically uses a good-quality magnetic compass with clear degree markings, and may cross-check with a digital compass. Degree markings matter because Vastu zones are defined by angles, not just the eight broad directions.

Many consultants divide the home into sixteen zones rather than eight, which requires finer readings. The compass is used alongside a scaled floor plan, a measuring tape and photographs, so that readings on site can be transferred precisely onto paper.

03

How is a compass reading taken on site?

A compass reading is taken from several positions, both inside the home and near the entrance, and the consistent readings are used. A single reading is rarely relied upon.

  • 01

    Hold it flat and steady

The compass must be level, held at waist height, away from the body's metal items such as watches, keys and phones.

  • 02

    Align with a wall

The consultant aligns the compass edge parallel to a main wall and notes the degree the wall faces.

  • 03

    Read from multiple points

Readings are taken near the centre, near the main door (from inside, facing out), and in two or three rooms.

  • 04

    Check outside if possible

A reading in the society compound or on an open terrace helps confirm the building's orientation.

  • 05

    Average consistent readings

Outliers caused by interference are discarded, and the steady value is used.

04

What interferes with a compass reading in a flat?

Steel, electrical wiring and appliances interfere most with compass readings in flats. Mumbai's reinforced concrete buildings contain a great deal of steel, so readings inside a flat can shift noticeably from one spot to another.

  • 01

    Metal grilles and safety doors

Readings taken right next to a steel door can be misleading.

  • 02

    Appliances

Refrigerators, induction cooktops, speakers, inverters and washing machines.

  • 03

    Electrical panels and wiring

Distribution boards and heavy cables inside walls.

  • 04

    Columns and beams

Reinforcement steel in structural members close to where the reading is taken.

  • 05

    Parked vehicles and lifts

For readings in the compound or lobby.

05

How does the reading become a Vastu zone map?

The reading becomes a zone map when the consultant marks North on a scaled floor plan and overlays the Vastu grid from the centre of the home. Each room then falls into one or more zones.

First, the ब्रह्मस्थान (Brahmasthan, the centre) is located by balancing the overall shape of the home. Lines are drawn from the centre at the correct angles to create eight or sixteen zones. The consultant then notes which rooms, doors, toilets, water points, stoves and beds fall in each zone. This map, based on the वास्तु पुरुष मंडल (Vastu Purusha Mandala), becomes the working document for the whole consultation.

06

How is the main entrance checked by pada?

The main entrance is checked by pada, meaning its exact position along the wall is compared with the squares of the Vastu mandala. Each side of the home is divided into padas, each ruled by a different devta with its own qualities.

This is why two South-facing flats in the same building can have quite different entrance assessments. A door in one pada may be considered supportive, while a door a little further along the same wall may call for a remedy. A precise compass reading and accurate measurements make this pada check possible.

07

Can you take a Vastu compass reading yourself?

Yes, you can take a basic reading yourself with a phone compass, which is useful for a first impression before buying or renting. It is less reliable for a full analysis.

  • 01

    Calibrate first

Follow your phone's calibration prompt, usually by moving the phone in a figure-of-eight.

  • 02

    Remove covers

Magnetic phone cases and card holders affect readings.

  • 03

    Stand away from metal

Step at least a metre or two away from doors, grilles and appliances.

  • 04

Stand at the doorway facing out

Note the degree you face while standing inside the main door looking out.

  • 05

    Repeat

Take readings at three or four spots and compare them.

When to consult a Vastu expert

Consult a Vastu expert when your readings vary, when the flat is irregular in shape, or when you need a full analysis rather than a first impression. Dr. Kimaya Parikh-Ambekar begins with a distant analysis of your floor plan, then takes on-site compass measurements, discusses the findings with you, and provides a personalised written report with remedies and follow-up.

She is based in Andheri East and visits homes and offices across Mumbai. For homes elsewhere, a distant consultation using an accurate floor plan and photographs is possible.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can I use a mobile phone compass for Vastu?

A phone compass is fine for a first impression if you calibrate it and stand away from metal. For a full Vastu analysis, readings from several points by a consultant are more reliable.

Where should I stand to check the direction of my main door?

Stand just inside the main door, facing outwards, and note the compass reading. Step slightly away from a steel safety door to avoid interference.

Why do compass readings change inside my flat?

Readings change because steel in columns, grilles, wiring and appliances disturbs the magnetic field. Take several readings away from metal and use the consistent value.

What are the 16 zones in Vastu?

The 16 zones divide a home into finer segments than the eight main directions, such as North-North-East and East-North-East. They allow more precise placement of rooms and remedies.

Is a floor plan enough for a Vastu consultation?

A floor plan with North accurately marked allows a useful distant consultation. An on-site compass reading confirms orientation and reveals details a plan may miss.
