Neither is read as a label. The useful part of the conversation is usually about friction — where a name number and a birth number pull differently, or where a number that suits your work does not suit your home life.

What is more often discussed is the working spelling: how you sign, how you introduce yourself, what appears on a visiting card or a brand. That is adjustable without touching a single legal document, and it is where most of the practical benefit lies.

If you are living abroad and already use an adapted spelling, say so. Many people carry two versions of their own name for a decade without ever thinking about it, and simply noticing which one they use where is often the most useful part of the session.
